Tape 1, Side A
"Hey, it's Hannah. Hannah Baker"
A TIME WITH HANNAH BAKER
It's the middle of the night, almost midnight and all you could've heard was the giggles of two happy teenage schools. Did you hear me? I said two happy teenage girls. It was the night before their sophomore year of high school. Haley was over Hannah house for the billionth time since they've had met that day in her parents drugstore. They talked about everything basically, the specifics of their lives before the they moved to the tiny town of Cresmont. They even talked about things that neither one of them thought they could ever muster up in a conversation again. That feeling of being able to talk about their terrifying pasts made them love each other, comfortable with each other.
"Wait so your dad is in prison?" Hannah said feeling upset for the girl
"Yup, got into a bar fight, and ended up killing a man. I mean he was a drunken bastard anyway, but he was my dad Hannah. He taught me almost everything I know when he wasn't sipping a beer can. But know he's in prison for another year or two." She says with no facial expressions. Hannah didn't know what to say at first, but she'd know that she was broken from an incident like that. Hannah then scooted towards her best friend and embraced her in a tight hug that could suffocate. Haley laughed, and hugged her back.
" A wise person once said that hugs can kill a person, but only if it wasn't genuine" Hannah said jokingly
"Well thank god I'm not dead, I don't know what I'd do in the after world without my partner in crime" She says with a smile.
"Ok enough with this cheesy sad moment, how about we watch this scary movie...it's a classic!" Hannah takes it out her backpack and holds up with a smirk.
"The Wolf Man?" She laughs
"Yes Haley, The Wolf Man it's one of the best classic scary movies of all time! If you love me, you will watch it." Hannah says with it a fake puppy dog face.
" Fine I'll go get the popcorn" she says rolling her eyes with a smile.
THE PRESENT
Hayley was strong one of the strongest people you'd ever lay your eyes on. After her her in prisoned father, the heartbreak of her encounter of her former best friend Kat, and the love of her life, and most of all the cherry that tops it all was the loss of her partner in crime Hannah. You see remember the wall in her mind, it was rebuilt to its former glory, and it was her mission that the tiny guards will let no one pass. She walked towards her locker, to get her biology text book for her next class. It was lunch period and she wasn't feeling up to go...well you know interact will human beings. She slams her locker door shut, and felt her spine almost jump from out her body and probably crawl away somewhere. "God, Alex I was going to-"
"To what?" He laughed until he continued "Alex, omg why would you do that!" he yelled trying to imitate his friends voice. She then punched him in the arm playfully before returning to her blank face state. A face where nobody could see wether the girl was happy, mad, sad, anything really. Alex had platinum blonde hair, electric blue eyes, but not as bright as Hayley's, and a bull like nose piercing. He used to have a ginormous crush on her after the incident because he comforted her, and they laughed. He thought her eyes and smile was so beautiful. They became friends ever since.
*Flashback*
It was three weeks after the incident between well you know who. Hayley had been at the park where her and Justin had first kissed. Alex had been walking with headphones on his way home from god knows where. He then looked up and heard sniffles. He saw the girl sitting on top of the slide wiping of her tears as she sighted the boy. He then climbed and sat next to her. "Hey Alex" she says putting on a fake smile, which was at all convincing to Alex. He knew what was the matter with the girl, and hesitated to ask at first, until blurted it out without anything to loose.
"Justin is a ass hat anyway Hayley. I mean he's dumb if he lost a hot chick like yo-...I mean your super smart too, and-" he stops as he hears the girl laughing she then looked up to the boy with her blue eyes, and he felt his cheeks get hot. He laughed nervously. Hayley than got up and looked down at the boy.
"Thank you Alex." She says leaving the boy smiling. Ever since that day he had been walking back to the park hoping he'd see the girl. It was the third day, and he didn't see the girl.
"This was so stupid." He says shaking his head realizing his plan to see the girl was not really thought through.
"You talk to yourself a lot?" He heard a voice in the distance say. He looked up and say the girl walking towards him. He then smiled
"Occasionally" he jokingly says to the girl making her laugh.
"Well I was headed to The Cresmont, you wanna come, or do you have to ask yourself first?" Hayley says jokingly back.
"Um yeah sure." He smiles
*Flashback over*
"So Morgan where you headed?" Alex says to the girl with a smile. She didn't want to upset the boy, not again at least by lying...that's a story for another time though
"I was going to study for that biology test I have next period actually since never found the time too, cheer and everything just been stressing me out." she says, watching Alex nod his head, his smile then turned into a frown.
"When you say everything you mean by Hannah don't you?" He says looking down at the girl. She nods, and things had just gotten awkward between the too. They both loved Hannah, and miss her oh so dearly.
"I'll see you later?" Hayley says at Alex before the bell rings. She then rolls her eyes. She watches as her friend nods and heads toward Bryce's little group. She shakes her head, and rushes toward her biology class, hoping she'll get there early so she can review her notes before the damn test.
She then gets there and sits in her normal seat next to another one of her close friends Jessica. She the smiles at Jessica and she returned it.
"How's cheer going?" Jessica asks since she had quit due to the same reason as herself, because of their beloved friend Hannah.
"To be honest, it's been so fucking stressful, balancing between that and school." Hayley says frustrated. Jessica nods her head. She could tell Jessica was broken , just as she was, all she wanted to do was confide her issues to her, and feel as if she understood just like Hannah had. As Haley opens her book to look at the notes their teacher had walked in a set down her morning coffee before staring at the class.
"I've made a decision that since everyone is mourning of the passing of a former student Hannah..." Hayley then rolls her eyes before the teacher continues, "I'm not going to put more stress on your backs by giving you the test, so I'm going to pair you guys up to write an essay." She says. The class cheered mostly the students that only knew Hannah from the flying rumors that went around, which made Hayley roll her eyes not taking it to heart.
"At least we don't have to take the test I'm already failing as it is." Jessica says relieved. She nods at Jessica, listening to the teacher call out names.
"Morgan and Reed." She says looking at me nodding. Hayley then look back at Bryce, Montgomery cheering and whistling for Scott.
"Be careful Reed I heard Hayley is a freak." Montgomery says looking towards me winking. She balls up her fist before standing turning to give that piece of shit what he deserved. Before she felt someone grip her arm. She looks down at Jessica as she makes a pleading look at Hayley.
"Hayley, no they're bad news trust me, please just sit down." She says. Hayley didn't know what to think. She didn't know what she had meant by what she said, but instead she just nodded her head, and took the defeat.
The bell then rang, and she waved goodbye to Jessica not looking where she was looking in her other direction. She then looked ended up bumping into the one and only Clay Jenson. He had looked tired and spooked. He then took of his headset and took a cassette out of jacket pocket, so he could pause what ever he was listening too. "Wow Clay I didn't know you were into the ancient artifact of the cassette. What are you listening too?" Hayley says interested in the thing her parents had told her about.
"Why umm, I actually got it from Tony he said I could barrow it to listen to some tapes." He says not knowing what she had known or how much she didn't know. He then looked behind her and saw Bryce and his little crew staring at them. Hayley then stares at the group and rolls her eyes and the annoying group, that bothered her endlessly.
"Well I hope what ever you listening too isn't as old as our parents" she says jokingly. In that moment Clay had nodded his head laughing.
"Yeah far from." He says. He had realized she was and ignorant to the things that goes around this school then he was just a couple days ago. He put on a fake smile and then walked off. He heard the her voice of and over again like it was playing on a loop.
"Hey, it's Hannah. Hannah Baker. That's right. Don't adjust your...whatever device your hearing this on. It's me. Live and in stereo. No return engagements, no encore, and this time absolutely no request. Get a snack. Settle in. Because I'm about to tell you the story of my life."
Clay only hoped she would stay this ignorant to the truths of all her friends. Because listening to the tapes might just destroy her as much as it was destroying him, and everyone else....well except for one!Hey guys thanks for reading and also thanks for almost getting me to freaking 200 views.
