"Gina! Wait up!" Suddenly I feel someone crashing into me and two arms wrap around me from behind. I start giggling and turn around in her arms, wrapping mine around her waist.
"Emma, what are you doing?"
"We gotta go to class." She grins and points in the direction I was heading. I just smile and shake my head at her quirkiness. I link my arm in hers and we walk the rest of the way together. Emma and I are both seniors in high school. We've been best friends for years. We're practically inseparable. A lot of people think we're dating. It's never been like that, but now that we're older I've been thinking about it a lot. Sometimes I find myself thinking about what it would feel like to kiss her. I've never kissed or dated anyone, neither has she.
Suddenly the sound of her voice wakes me from my daydreaming. "Dude," she hisses at me. I look up and see Killian and Robin standing in front of us. They're our other friends. I'm pretty sure Killian likes Emma. Actually I'm certain of it. We all are. He's not great at hiding it. Emma sometimes playfully flirts with him, but I know she's not too interested in actually dating him.
"Hey guys, what's up?" I say awkwardly, not sure how long they had been standing in front of me.
"Umm," Killian speaks up, "I actually just wanted to ask Emma something."
She looks at me. "Okay then, ask away." She gives him a weird look.
"Well," he scratches behind his ear nervously, "Do you want to go out with me?"
Her face goes red and her eyes shoot open. She wasn't expecting this. She looks around at all of us. Her eyes meet mine then dart back to his. "Uh... I guess so. I mean yeah, why not."
I look at her, wide eyed. My ears are ringing. I can't hear what they're saying anymore. She said yes. She said YES. What the actual hell?! She can't go on a date with him. Her first date. Are they going to be boyfriend and girlfriend now? Fall in love? Get married? Have kids together?
Wait. What's wrong with me? Why am I thinking like this? It's just one date. She's my best friend. I should be happy for her. But I can't. I don't like this.
---
The rest of the morning flies by and we all meet up again at lunch. I sit next to Emma in awkward silence as we wait for the boys to get there.
"So, what? Do you like him now?" I finally speak up.
"I dunno. Maybe. It's just one date."
"Yeah, but it's your first date. Like Ever. It's a big deal Emma!"
"It doesn't have to be. It's just a stupid date. Why are you acting like this? What's wrong?"
"Nothing! Nothing is wrong. I just... you're too good for him. You could do better."
"Yeah? Who do you have in mind?" She looks deep into my eyes, as if peering into my soul. We look at each other for what seems like forever. I find myself leaning in slowly, she is too. My heart is beating like mad.
"Hey, how's it going?" We both jump back at the sound of Robin's voice. He looks at us suspiciously. I gulp. Emma and I glance at each other then look at Robin. Recovering from the moment we just had while trying to come up with an explanation as to why we were so close to each other. Then Killian appears and slides into the seat next to Emma and puts his arm around her shoulder, unintentionally saving our asses.

The rest of the day continues like nothing happened. That night I head to Emma's house. We always go stargazing every Friday night at her house.
She greets me with a hug like normal, seeming to have completely forgotten about what happened at lunch. We make popcorn before heading upstairs to her room. We crawl out her window on to the roof. It's best place to look at the stars. We lay on the blankets next to each other in a peaceful silence.
"So... do you like Killian?" I ask her. I just have to know.
"I told you already. I don't know. I could like him. And he's a nice guy. Nothing bad could come from going out with him."
"hmm."
"Come on. Regina. Don't be like that. Why are you so against me going out with him?" She sits up and looks at me. I do the same. She wraps her hands around mine.
I look down at our joined hands. My heart is beating so loud. I'm sure she can hear it too. "I think you know."
She lifts up my chin, making me look at her. "I want you to say it."
I haven't even said it to myself yet. I'm too scared to make it real. I'm scared of rejection, being made fun of. Most of all, I am scared of losing my best friend.
I feel the cool breeze on my face. Her thumb rubs my hand in gentle circles. I can feel her breath ghosting over my lips. She's moved closer to me. Only centimetres from my face. "Because I like you."
She closes the gap between us. Meeting my lips in a gentle kiss. My hands wrap around her neck, deepening it. We kiss forever. I never want it to end. She smiles into the kiss and pulls away, looking deep into my eyes. "I like you too, Regina."
My lips crash into hers again. It couldn't feel more perfect.
