Chapter 3.

♫ KAT ♫

He’s weird.

His reaction isn’t as expected. Instead of throwing me a pity expression or making up some excuse to avoid me, he actually moves closer. Maybe he’s different from the others.

My phone flashes and vibrates with a new message.

Him: How do you do it, then? How can you live without sound?

A little of annoyance and anger courses through me as I read the question that everyone asks, inherently snobby and insulting. He’s not any different from the others. But when my eyes scan over his face, all I see is pure curiosity and interest, washing away my initial emotions.

Me: I dunno. It’s all I’ve ever known.

He nods in understanding, typing away again.

Him: So I guess you don’t want to help me out?

One of those sad-face emoticons ends his text, confusing me. Does he still want me to help him out? I’m deaf. If he wants someone to help him out with his music, shouldn’t he ask someone who can actually hear it?

Him: I’ll pay you. Money, time, food. Just name it.

Something about that touches my heart; he still wants my help! A smile lights up my face.

When I don’t respond, he smiles, letting out breaths; I assume he’s laughing. Then, my heart drops a little and a frown etches on to my features. He’s kidding. That’s just cruel.

Proving me wrong for a second time, however, he slowly mouths – very terribly, might I add – “Please think about it, okay?”

He gets up, but I hold him back, my hand around his warm wrist. I try to remember why I did that, attempting to ignore the tingles and the warmth shooting up my arm. Not to mention that my heart is beating pretty fast. He raises his eyebrow in question as he turns around, waiting for me to do something. I pull away, typing on my phone again.

Me: I don’t know your name, yet.

I don’t even think about how stupid it sounds – it’s not even a question – before I hit the ‘send’ button. He laughs again before mouthing something really quickly.

It looked like he mouthed “Check” really fast for his name. Check? Check what?

Before I can send him another message, he’s walking away.

Is he trying to be mysterious?

Well, it’s working.
