Friday night had finally arrived and Carol found herself feeling excited. She had worked through many possible situations in her head over the past 36 hours and she felt as though she was prepared... until Barbara walked in.
"I'm taking the car tonight," she said.
"Um... no. I'm taking the car tonight. I've had plans since yesterday," Carol replied.
"Oh, is there a late night chess club meeting I wasn't aware of?" Barb shot back.
"No," Carol scowled. "I'm going to the football game." Barb laughed at this remark and Carol began to get agitated. "I'm serious!" she yelled.
"Jesus, relax! I'm going too. I call driving, though," Barb said.
"Fine, but we have to stop to pick someone up," Carol uttered.
"Oh, right. The chess club... I almost forgot," Barb smiled.
"Her name is Jenna and as far as I know, she is not in the chess club. I met her in math. She's okay," Carol said.
"Alright. But if she's got like a lisp or she doesn't like James Taylor, she's getting the boot."
Six minutes later Barb pulled the 1975 Lincoln Continental up to the curb bordering Jenna's house. Carol got out and walked briskly to the door. After ringing the doorbell, she heard footsteps approaching rapidly. The door swung open and Jenna stood in the doorway.
"It's 6:03, Carol. Is being late like your thing?" Jenna laughed. She had on off-white bell bottoms and a navy blue school spirit shirt tied in a knot above her bellybutton. Carol's eyes had a hard time obeying her mind which was telling her to stop staring.
"I'm so sorry your majesty. I forgot for a moment that my only purpose in life is to serve you," Carol said in a playful voice.
"Well that's what I like to hear. Now let's get going!" Jenna grabbed her purse in one hand and the doorknob in the other and leaped out the door with a smile on her face.
When the girls finally arrived at school for the second time that day, they got out of the car and walked down the sidewalk toward the football field which was lit up by the many floodlights that surrounded it. When they got to the bleachers, Barb left Carol and Jenna to join her two girlfriends who were sharing a soda and watching the game, which had started a few minutes earlier.
When Carol and Jenna finally found a good place to sit, Carol offered to go buy soda and candy for them to share. Jenna nodded and smiled and Carol walked over to the snack bar feeling confident in how she was doing so far. But while she was in line, she saw something that changed her state of mind.
About 200 feet away in the dim lighting of a flickering streetlight, Carol could see the silhouettes of three boys about her age. One of them was curled up on the floor while the other two were kicking him in the stomach and head. He groaned and cried but Carol could only faintly hear it. She watched with a blank stare as the boy on the floor began to move less and less. And with one final kick to the head, his body fell limp.
"Miss? Excuse me, miss? Are you going to buy anything?" the woman at the snack bar asked, pulling Carol out of her trance.
"Yes," Carol said. "I'll take a pack of Razzles and a Coke." The woman handed her the snacks and Carol payed. She looked one more time toward the streetlight boys. By now though, there was only the one; laying limp on the floor. She wondered insensibly if he was dead. She walked away.
"Razzles?"
"Oh, yes please!" Jenna said. Carol sat down on the cold, metal bleachers and sipped her soda. She stared blankly out toward the glowing green field. She watched the bodies of high school boys migrate from one end to the other and listened for the roar of high school girls when they scored. She stared until her eyes blurred and her thoughts drew her into a trance of emptiness and solitude. She thought about the streetlight boy. She thought about how she didn't care if he was dead or not and if that made her an evil person; and then if she cared if she was evil. She didn't. She felt safe and comfortable in her numbness. She wanted things like love and success but she wanted them purely for the experience. Being in a relationship and having kids was never to be a thing on her list of life goals.
"Carol! Hello? Carol!" she heard in the distance. "Carol!" Her trance broke and she turned to see Barb standing at the end of the row of bleachers. "I'm going to Domingo's after the game and I have a ride. Here are the keys." She tossed the keys to Carol and left.
"Domingo's," Jenna said. "That sounds fun."
"Trust me, it won't be," Carol replied. "I have a better idea anyways." She grabbed Jenna's hand and got up.
"We're leaving now? The game's not even over yet."
"It's not like we're gonna win anyways." Still holding onto Jenna's hand, Carol pulled her up from her seat on the bleachers and they walked together back to the car.
"So where exactly are we going?" Jenna asked as they drove through the night, passing under an occasional orange streetlight.
"It's a secret."
