In ancient Rome, arranged marriages are a normal thing. Spirited Cornelia doesn’t like her prospective bridegroom and isn’t afraid to let him know it. But maybe she shouldn’t have whacked him on the head with her favorite author and dashed heedlessly into the woods, alone! If she hadn’t, her adventure (and ours) would have never begun. It’s straight from the pot into the fire as Cornelia finds herself in imminent danger from a creature that looks like it’s straight out legend. And it’s not the only escapee, though these critters aren’t leaking out of a book of myths, but from the hold of a spaceship.

Cornelia’s no wilting maiden who needs rescuing. But neither is she warrior enough to handle this monster on her own. She’s courageous and caring even in the face of certain death and naif enough to make us smile. Fortunately, back up has arrived in the form of a most peculiar spaceship crew, and so, as Gaius Julius Caesar would say, “the die is cast” on the beginning of an unlikely partnership. Can Cornelia convince the stranded crew that they need her help to survive on Earth? Will the crew stop fighting among themselves long enough to work their way out of their predicament? Will they manage to round up their lost cargo? And what about that strange guy with the blue flames and the attitude problem? Cornelia had better watch herself around that one!

The crew, for better or worse, have taken on the personas of the Olympians to try to fit in on Earth. And now, young Cornelia is their best available guide to fitting in. While they work on repairing their ship and recovering Zeus’s lost “inventory”, Cornelia learns about their true history. She also learns a bit about herself and the world along the way. The story wends its way through many Greco-Roman legends as Cornelia's story unfolds. Each chapter has all the in-fighting, monster-slaying, and romantic plot twists we would expect from the source material.

This ongoing tale based on Roman myths with an added Science Fiction twist reminds me in part of the Decameron, that bawdy collection of Italian moral tales, and even more of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. I’m not sure how or when the grand tale of the S.S. Olympus will end, though we’re pretty sure how the tale of Persephone and Hades will conclude.

While you can’t read the story out of order, each part is a delicious tale to be enjoyed on its own as well as contributing to the overall plot arc. This work has won a lot of awards for a reason-- It’s an awesome mix of research and creativity. The world-building and research is spot on. Unlike some historical fiction tales, laorangerose didn’t let the story become stiff and old-fashioned. Though it retains its Roman aesthetic, it feels fresh and exciting. With its lovely mix of classic and original storylines, each new installment never ceases to amaze and delight me.
