Percy opened the door to Midtown High School and made a beeline towards the front office. The first day of school started in ten minutes and he still didn't have his schedule. Percy wanted to say he'd just been to busy to get his schedule, what with managing two secret identities, but the reality was that Percy Jackson was an all-time procrastinator. One of the big things people often got wrong about Captain America was that he wasn't an adult. He was only 18 years old.
As he walked towards the office, Percy surveyed the building. The school was pretty crappy. It was an ugly brick building that clearly had been standing for many years. From what he'd heard, the teachers were rude and the students annoying, but Percy didn't have many options. For one, this high school was fourty minutes from his house in Queens since he was running out of schools he hadn't been expelled from. Next, Peter Parker went to Midtown. Also, his girlfriend had just transferred to Midtown. After the Giant War, Percy and Annabeth decided to take another shot at leading a somewhat normal life. Annabeth was very insistent on trying to be normal, which was one of the reasons Percy hadn't told her about his new secret identity.
Apparently during the Giant War, a group of superheroes called the Avengers had been fighting some aliens. Both the Greek and Roman gods were wary of these new "superheroes," so they wanted a demigod to check it out. They decided to choose their two-time war champion, Percy Jackson. Hephaestus had made Percy a suit and told Percy to be "Captain America." The supersoldier was originally from the 1940's, but the original Captain America had "retired." The original Captain America had appeared because the gods realized the humans needed help defeating Hydra. Now, the gods wanted Percy to take over and make a comeback with Captain America, because now there were a bunch of vigilantes that the gods weren't sure about. His alibi was that he had been trapped in ice for many years. Percy knew who the original Captain America was, but he wasn't allowed to tell a soul.
Percy finally found the office. It was a small room with glass walls. Probably for the office staff to spy on passing students. He opened the door, a bell hanging on it dinging. It was a loud bell, yet the man at the front desk stubbornly ignored him and stared at his computer screen. Percy went up to the desk. The man showed no sign of recognition so Percy cleared his throat.
"Hi. Um, I'm a new student," Percy said. The man continued staring at his computer so he added, "I need my schedule."
The man looked up, an annoyed expression on his face. Was there some unspoken rule that office staff where always rude? "What's the name, kid?"
"Percy Jackson."
He told the Avengers he would sign up for school under the alias "Percy Jackson." That way it would make sense if Annabeth called him that.
The man at the desk shuffled through some papers on his desk and then pulled one out. It was crinkled, so the man tried smoothing it out. It didn't work, though, so he just grunted and handed it over. Percy nodded at him and took it, leaving the office. He didn't even bother looking at the schedule, knowing he couldn't read it with his dyslexia.
Next on his to-do list was to find someone who could read his schedule to him. He saw a girl in the office who looked decently friendly, so he went up to her. "Hey," he said awkwardly. "I'm new here but I have dyslexia, so I was at if you could help me find my classes?" He asked, blushing. He never liked admitting he was dyslexic. The number of times Percy had been made fun of for that was in the triple digits.
The girl raised her eyebrows at him. "You seriously think I would fall for that? You're cute though, so whatever. Here, hand me your schedule."
Percy, who was very confused, obliged. He grabbed a sticky note and a pen off the office desk. As the girl read out his schedule, Percy wrote it down in Greek. When she was done, she scribbled something on the paper and handed it back to him, smirking. "Thanks," Percy said. "I'm Percy, by the way." He held out his hand.
