"Pack your stuff, we're leaving the city."
My father's stern voice cuts through the dark of my room. I didn't question it and I wouldn't question it, and that's how it had to be. Living here with him. I just picked up the boxes he left outside my door and packed up my meager possessions.
The next few hours were spent packing throw pillows, blenders, coffee mugs, silverware, toasters, and furniture, trying to ignore the thick silence radiating from both myself and my father. He hadn't said a word since, but in a sense I was grateful. I don't think small talk is his strong suit nor is it mine.
Later in the car I look back at the place that has been my home for the past 17 years. The place that haunts my memories and nightmares. The only home I had ever known. I couldn't help but mourn it.
And looking up towards the towering skyscrapers and shimmering city lights I heard my father's hushed whispers with his driver picking up only bits and pieces.
"Connecticut.....on the Sound.....Seabrook"
And for the first time in years, I didn't feel the sense of foreboding fear set at the bottom of my stomach, instead I felt excitement for something new. And maybe it was just my wishful thinking but this could be a new start because I new exactly where I was going.
