I stared at myself in the mirror, still in disbelief over the events of this week. Blake declared his love for me, Graham left me, I chickened out of telling Blake I loved him, and now I was getting ready to go to Homecoming in the exact opposite situation I expected. Because in all honesty I kind of did think Graham and I would end up going together because I didn't have many other options when it came to potential teenage boy admirers. I'd then be going to Baylor's Homecoming and I'd cheer on my brother, who would still be talking to me.
But based on the events of the pep rally earlier today, none of that was going to happen. I was going to be on my own.
I looked over at McKenzie, who had set up shop in my bathroom while me and Maddie had to get ready in my various other mirrors. "Can you believe they still made me come down and be Graham's 'cheerleader'?"
"I mean, you technically volunteered to be the one that announced his name and gave him his Homecoming gift basket in front of the whole school at the pep rally. I don't think anyone saw this shit storm coming."
I scowled, before applying another layer of lipgloss. "You guys only saw the facial expressions. It was a whole other level of humiliation down there having to look at him, say his name, and congratulate him after what he did to me," I said bitterly.
"Ha, you had to see Seth there, too," Maddie laughed. "Have you guys even talked since you brought Blake home?"
"Nope," I muttered. "We've both eaten meals in our rooms for the past two days. Our parents haven't noticed it, but our absences have been very deliberate."
"I'll say. And lunch? Oh god, kill me now, Alexa. I would have suggested for us to take lunch in the library if I knew Graham was going to go that far," Maddie said.
"Maddie," I scoffed, "I'm gonna need you to come up with a better solution because I can't eat in the library with the freshmen for the rest of junior and senior year. Maybe Graham's the one that's gonna have to leave."
"Or you two can make up," McKenzie sang.
I chucked a lipstick at McKenzie, who yelped upon contact. "Have you not been listening? He friend-dumped me, Kenz. That's unforgivable. Unless he asks for forgiveness on a Caribbean cruise, that's not happening."
Maddie joined me in front of the body mirror and we posed for a quick body picture. A part of me felt kind of underdressed next to her but I stayed in the pictures to try and mask my insecurity. For homecoming she had chosen a red dress that complimented her figure perfectly. While I absolutely adored my navy skater dress, it didn't feel as bold next to her.
"McKenzie, the game will be almost over by now. We need to be there as either comfort or ego-boosters. You ready?" Maddie demanded.
McKenzie walked out like a disco ball. She had decorated herself with body glitter as well as body jewels to match the rhinestones on her dress. They adorned every inch of yellow silk draped on her.
Together, we were definitely an eyesore.

As we walked up, I couldn't tell who was winning and who was about to go home angry at the world. Both sides seemed all in and weren't ready to give in just yet. By the noise of the crowd, this was a nail biter game.
I looked around. All the girls for both schools were gathered by the concessions as they waited for their dates to either come off the field or come out of the stands. Our trio joined the gathering of prom-worthy looking girls, but I was the only one making an actual effort to look at the score.
