[5] different characters & character development & depth
^ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alright, pals, so like it seems there's a certain same type of characters that I have come across in fanfics:
➡ Totally punk and 2 cool 4 u. She probably has a lot of skeletons in her closet and you know they're all wearing flannels. Anything other than skinny jeans in public is a disgrace to the entire existence of pants. The music she listens to is extremely punk rock and she's definitely not impressed with you, Michael. She's so 3008 and you're 2000 and late so honestly, just gtfo — but before you do, stare into her soul, push her up against a wall and whisper in her ear, "Hey how ya doing lil momma let me whisper in ya ear / Tell ya something that ya might like to hear / Got a sexy ass body and yo ass look soft / Mind if I touch it and see if it's soft? / Naw I'm just playin less you say I can / And I'm known to be a real nasty man."
➡ Totally and utterly "insane." She always knew she was "crazy" and ya know, guesses she does belong in a mental asylum. Mental asylums really suck th — OM G CALUM SLAY MY NON ACCURATELY PORTRAYED "MENTALLY ILL" EXISTENCE !!! GO D I LVOE BEING INSANE !!!!!!
"u don't understand, main character, i'm dangerous..........the reason i'm in the hospital is because my jaw is so sharp that when i hugged my mom i accidentally slit her throat w it iM DANGEROUS"
➡ Totally nerdy and 2 good 4 u. She, of course, can't just stay nerdy or into school 'cause obviously no one likes school or obeying their parents sometimes. She knows for sure though that she would NEVER get with Michael Clifford. Wait, did she say that she would never get with Michael Clifford? She really meant, um, Michael...Michael Shmifford. She and Michael are currently making out and though she supposedly has never really had a boyfriend before, she's not only mastered the art of french-kissing but she's also completely absorbed Michael's soul and is already selling it on eBay. He also turned her punk as well. She really just needed a boy who dyes his hair every time he breathes to get all up in her grill to truly realize it. Now that's she realized that she's truly punk rock things are about to get real kinky in here, my friends.
➡ Totally sad/"depressed". Life sucks. Her family hates her or she has no friends or her life just completely sucks, but, of course, Luke is here to save her. Who needs antidepressants when you have Luke Hemmings? (amright ladies or amiright) All she really needs is someone to save her. [looks off into the distance]
➡ Totally hates Michael and wishes he would just leave the face of the earth and never speak to her aga — wait, when did they take their clothes off and oH MY GOODNESS
➡ Totally quiet. I never speak..............................................unless you're a hot Australian boy if so hey bae hmu u got kik holla @ me sometime so u can know all about my dark past that probably isn't really that dark.
➡ Totally (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) but if you mention love she flees to Africa. This girl has a really big problem with love and she's probably been a sucky relationship so all she wants to do is get some. She has no problems with you entering her vajiggle but when you enter her heart, you're in for some real trouble because she just came for a good time and honestly she's feeling so attacked right now.
Nooooooooow, these are a lot of common characters in 5sos fanfiction that go with common plots. I am definitely not saying to abandon these characters. What I'm truly saying is to give them some more depth!
CHARACTER DEPTH
Character depth is the key to having a unique and likeable or unlikeable character. Character depth is about giving reasons for things and having the character have certain relationships and experiences and not leaving them with one personality trait.
For example, you could give the punk girl a set of horribly bad parents and have that be the reason why she wanted to be rebellious — or you could give her a Grandma that raised her when, unbeknownst to you, her parents died and that Grandma happens to be someone she values greatly. That grandma could possibly be the reason why her character may be punk but extremely caring (look at that another personality trait wowie !!!).
Maybe the depressed girl has way more than you know to her; give her story depth. Sometimes, people are battling with depression for an unknown reason. Sometimes, it sprouts from a certain experience. Detail that experience (maybe write it out as a scene for yourself to refer to) so your character can allude to that or can be reminded of certain things. Give her things she used to love today; depth !!
Maybe the nerd or smart gal had a lot of boyfriends (because come on, guys, nerds are awesome and who wouldn't want to be with one) so she's actually really experienced. That nerd can also be very daring as well and can also be smart because she, maybe, was inspired by a certain figure in history and wanted to be like that (look at that another quirk that makes her unique totally tubular !!!!!). Your characters don't have to be one certain thing.
Like, you can put your label on them as you wish (nerd, jock, popular, punk, quiet, satan worshipper, whatevr rlly) but they don't have to exactly be a stereotype of each one. The popular girl can be really into rock music and be really nice to everyone and have her friends accept that. The nerd can love learning, but not love school itself because maybe they feel like their school system sucks. The jock can loves sports but also really enjoy eating junk food even though it goes against his or her diet. The quiet girl can actually be quite loud once you get to know her and maybe doesn't love reading in class at all and chooses to watch netflix on her phone in class all day.
Give your characters a past, give your characters a future, and you will thus give your characters a now. Give them a whole bunch of traits and make them expected but at the same time, unexpected.
SIDE TIP:character profiles! You can find them online or on Tumblr! They're so helpful, seriously. They're basically a series of question that you have to answer in the voice of your character and you might see the questions and get discouraged if you see a lot of them but honestly, they're really fun and really helpful in getting to know your character and making them 3 dimensional.
Now for CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
If it's chapter 43 and Sally is still going out with the douche who cheats on her every time he blinks and Luke is still unable to express to her that HER BOYFRIEND'S A BUTTHEAD AND HE IS MADLY IN LOVE WITH HER then you're doing this wrong. Waaaay wrong.
We, as people, develop with every experience. We become harsher, softer, more closed-off, more trusting, more distrusting, more open, more thoughtful, more confident, more insecure, more. We become more. Your characters need to grow with their experiences.
If she and Luke are fighting every day, then you have to cause a(n) event(s) that will develop her or him so that they'll realize their relationship isn't at where it's supposed to be. If she is having a hard time trusting people, make a(n) event(s) that will develop her to the point where she is ready to trust people.
This is basically about making your character grow like any normal person would — maybe for better, maybe for worse. Your story, your ending.
and that is all 4 this one good nite no hate & forget 2 subscribe
