I wake up with a smile on my face.

Today's the day. It's not just any other day, although it might be for some people. But for me, it's a very special day.

It's my birthday. But not just any birthday. Today I turn 18. But that's not the special part. Sure, I can vote now and i'm now considered an adult to the government. But something more exciting is happening today. Something much more life changing. I'm going to meet my soulmate.

Well, not really meet them, I guess.

A few years ago there was a huge scandal in the government. I know, such a surprise, right? Well, this one was huge. There were more affairs than ever, and all within the government. It was the last straw. The country got tired of so much scandal happening and most of it always pointed back to sex. So, they came up with a solution.

On your 18th birthday you get the first words your soulmate will say to you tattooed on your arm. Don't ask me how they know what it is, it's all super hush hush. But there has been practically no problems involving relationships since they started doing this. It looks as if the government finally did something good.

Ever since they taught us about this whole soulmate tattoo thing, I've been imagining what the first words will be and who will be saying them. I want the Troy to my Gabriella. And I wouldn't be opposed to being soulmates with Zac Efron, either. But I know that will never happen so I'm hoping for the next best thing.

Lucas Friar. Moved from Texas back in seventh grade and we've been best friends since then. He's very attractive, kind, caring, and gentle. He's like a real life prince charming. I blush whenever he smiles at me and I have this weird giggle whenever he says something funny. Everything he says is funny. He's so charming. I cross my fingers and close my eyes, praying to God that Lucas is my soulmate.

I finally get out of bed, get ready and head to the kitchen. My family is waiting for me with my favorite breakfast: pancakes and bacon. We eat quickly.

"Are you ready?" My mother asks in the car.

I take a deep breath to calm my nerves. "Yeah, I think so. I hope it makes sense. The tattoo, I mean."

"Even if it doesn't make sense now, it will make sense when it needs to." My mother assures me.

I smile in acknowledgment and stare out the window until we reach city hall. Sounds weird, right? Getting a tattoo in city hall? But since it's government mandated, the government has to be the one to issue it.

We walk into the doors and head to the correct department.

"Name." The secretary says, in a very monotone voice.

"Riley Matthews." I tell her. I glance over at my parents and they give me an excited thumbs up.

"Right this way." The secretary points me to a door. I take a deep breath and walk in.

It only takes twenty minutes and then I walk back out into the lobby to meet my parents. I look down at my arm in anticipation. The tattoo is currently covered with gauze until it's healed enough to be uncovered.

Before we walk out the door, the secretary says, "Remember! Don't tell anyone what it says. There are severe consequences for doing so."

I nod my head and follow my parents out the door.

"How can only I see my tattoo? Is that even possible?" I ask, as we drive back home.

"Some kind of special ink. It has some... thing in it that connects to your blood or cells or something so only your eyes can see it and nobody else's. Took them forever to perfect it for twins, but they got it." My dad explains, not very well.
