Elissa sits in her study, surrounded by the wisdom of her forefathers and commands the mirror, "Connect me to Kai."

She still can't go near the thing, however this mild inconvenience is made up for by the fact that she can request it to find anyone. Whether that person is near another magic mirror or not, it merely opens a link to the nearest reflective surface.

She found this out by mistake one day, wishing to know how Altair was doing, only for the mirror to reflect him standing in his bathing chamber. Thankfully he was fully clothed and just going about his morning ablutions, but needless to say both were embarrassed.

The one limitation is that, no matter how hard she wishes for it, she cannot contact her old friends back on Earth.

This time it is the hulking figure of Kai that appears in the mirror's shimmering surface. His gaze flickers to the empty chair beside her. "Is Garrett not joining us? I would rather not give my report twice."

She has to curl her fingers to curb the urge to lean forward and smooth the crease in between his eyebrows. Instead she teases, "My, you are a grumpy bear this morning."

The scowl softens and the corner of his lip lifts slightly. "So long as I am your grumpy bear."

She flushes slightly. "I wanted to take the opportunity to talk to you in private. I'm organising a surprise party on the next full moon. I would like you and the twins to attend. Dawn really misses them."

Kai just stares at her with a face of stone. Damn, have I offended him? She wilts under the weighty silence and belatedly offers,  "I'd really like to see you too."

He raises one eyebrow and finally he responds with a curt, "It will cost you. I am a busy man, you know."

"Oh, of course. What do you want?"

"An hour of your time. Alone." His eyes sparkle with amusement or desire or possibly a mixture of the two.

All of a sudden her mouth is terribly dry; the thought of seeing him fills her with both excitement and nervousness.  The study door opens behind her and she jumps in her seat, having forgotten that she was expecting company.

She nods to Kai and, plastering a professional expression on her face, turns to face the head of her guard. "Ah, Garrett, perfect timing. Lord Kai is ready to give us an update."

"There is no change to the cracks. I have personally inspected them and the good news is that they do not penetrate all the way through to Tartarus. Queen Seraphina has agreed to increase the intake into the Academy and has asked me to set up a new training centre in my province. It will allow us to build our contingent of skilled warriors without raising any suspicions."

"Thank you Kai, that is all very reassuring."
