"I am lost within the fire I've created. Like God I held the world in my hands and watched it disintegrate along with the helpless souls from surface to core. The origins of this destruction will change from time to time. They will change it with every century that passes by, but I know the truth. I am the truth."
( Dream)
We were playing checkers. A game I knew I'd always lose but I still played.
"Dad?"
"Yes Errana."
"Do you fear death?"
My father laughed; something he didn't do often.
"Death sets you free. I will never fear it."
"From what? The bad guys?"
Moves checker.
"Bad guys? No... they are human just like us. Just with not so good intentions."
"Then we should fight them all!"
He laughs again.
"I do not fear death, but I will not throw myself in its arms for the thrill."
Moves checker.
"Erra we have to pick our battles wisely so that we don't die a fool but a hero."
One last move and he wins the game.
XXX
Something I never saw coming. Something I'll never forget.
"Where'd mom go?"
"She should be at work probably on her way home now."
"Okay, what are we doing today?"
"It's a-"
The door blows down.
"Errana get down! Get down!"
I follow his orders; hiding behind the cabinet as heavy footsteps enter our home.
"Vernon let's go!"
"For what? I owe you nothing."
"Never said you did. You have something that we need."
I've never heard his voice before. I peek my head to get better look.
A man, from the city?
Snake symbolizes crawling through his skin.
"I'm not going anywhere. I left for a reason. I don't have want you need."
The man laughs.
Who is he?
"Vernon stop with the games. You're putting everyone at stake, and you know it! I know you have a family. I don't want to hurt you Vernon!"
"I can't... I can't."
Why wouldn't he give in? What does he have? He slowly grabs a gun from his back pocket, and starts firing.
"Dad!"
"Errana stop!"
He jumps in front of me.
He shoots the gun for the last time.
"Dad!"
I'm not sure if he's dead.
"Errana."
He whispers, bleeding out from his collarbone, and lower abdomen.
"Stay up okay! You're fine!"
I lie.
" I- I chose-"
He tries so hard to speak, but can't function a sentence.
"My battle, one day you will chose yours."
"What?"
He reaches in his pocket, and pulls out a necklace.
"Take this Erra.... it means so much to me... to the city. Don't let it get into the wrong hands Errana. Look at the bigger picture."
"What?"
There is nothing he could say to make me understand. nothing.
*Wakes up*
