Licking my lips, I grabbed the hilt of my sword. My clammy hands were shaking, as was my whole body.
"My name is Michael. I am here to slay the very thing that all are afraid of. The Jabberwock. You dare protect it when it itself is a monstor?" I asked, suprised my voice did not crack. It snapped it's beak at me with sharpened eyes.
"I do not fear the Jabberwock," it said, with amusement. "In fact, I am his friend." I gasped, hoping my shock was not noticeable. It laughed harshly, obviously hiding was not an option.
"Did that suprise you any? Understanding the human ways is beyond me now." Now? What did that mean?
"What are you, if anything, but a friend?" I asked. It lifted up its head as high as possible. Intimidating was an understament.
"In the winds of time, I soar till the next be slain. I am the JubJub bird that guards my tree. I have the job for one purpose. To defeat any that pose a threat." His eyes raked over me. "Perhaps...you are no true threat, but a threat none the less." The JubJub bird darted to me, but I jerked my body to the right, falling on the ground with a thud.
Breathing heavily, it looked at me, then the tree, through slits.
"You've bested me...," It's voice trailed off with astonishment and confusion.
