"My name is Michael, and I have come to slay the Jabberwock! Come forth, you beast!" The trunk divided, exposing a space. A black claw raked out, dripping with some substance.

I gulped, seeing it come out with grace. The Jabberwock was here.

It's slender tail coiled, and whipped out in the air. Dangerous, I thought. It's long fangs were sharp and yellow. I ran towards it, aiming for an arm. The Jabberwock dodged.

"My story is like you heard. I am deadly," it said.

I swung, huffing, but missed again. "The end speaks of an immortal creature that has lived for centuries," it murmured with sadness.

Yelling out a husky cry, I jabbed it's neck. The Jabberwock leaned back with serenity.

"That part of my story is not true. I die...just like you." I looked up to see misty, damp eyes. "I haven't forgotten humanity, like my brothers have. Let me be in peace. I have seen them suffer so much that I, too, have suffered, but first, the story needs to be told."

It paused, watching me. "There was a boy, just like you, but unlike you he was being threatened by the Jabberwock. Meeting it by the tree led to a battle that had to be fought. The fight ended with a boy standing above a dead carcass. You see? The Jabberwock was not immortal, just replaced. Now please, kill me. I have lived many lifetimes. It is time for this one to end." He bowed his head, and closed his eyes.

I didn't hesitate.
