Steve Rogers Imagine "Birthday" Part 1

I'm awoken by the sound of a phone going off. I lift my hands to my ears to block out the sound as I hear Steve groan. I watch him pick up the phone and his tired face changes to a sad one. I know he just got called on a mission. And on the one day I really wanted him here with me. My birthday. Steve runs his hands over his face as he agrees to whatever Fury is saying while he gets up to get dressed. He hangs up and turns around to look at me.
"Please stay."
"You know I can't. God- I really, really wish I could. I just want to lay back down and hold you in my arms. But I can't. I've got a job to do. People to save."
I feel like crying. And he can see it.
"(Y/n)-"
"Don't Steve. I get it. It's part of the whole dating a super hero life. Just go."
"I'll make it up to you. I promise."
He comes over to kiss me and at first I want no part of it. But if anything happened to him and I hadn't kissed him, I'd never be able to forgive myself.
"I love you"
"I love you too, Steve. Go save some people."
Steve chuckles as he runs out of our bedroom. I can hear a car running outside and I assume it's one of the other Avengers coming to pick him up. As I turn over in bed I glance at the clock on my night stand. It's only 3:24 am. Great. So much for sleeping in on my birthday.
I decide to stay up and try and get some things done. Clean my room, take a shower, dry my hair, get some school work done. By the time I'm halfway finished grading my last paper it's only 7:00 am. This is gonna be a long day.
Around 3:00 pm I get a call from my best friend. I answer and am immediately greeted by her loud voice, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I'm coming to get you and Steve and we're going for food and drinks!" I chuckle at her enthusiasm but am saddened at the reminder that Steve won't be spending this birthday with me. "That's sounds great. Steve won't be joining us though. He's on a mission," I answer sadly. "Are you kidding? They couldn't send anyone else? What about the big dude with the hammer?" She questions. She's never really understood my life or his. Or how I can choose to date someone who's hardly ever around. But what can I say. Love is love. I can't help it. "Hammer dudes name is Thor, and no they couldn't send him. Steve was just the right guy for the job I guess. My birthday doesn't take rein over that, (bff/n)." I can hear her scoff over the phone obviously not liking my answer.
"Well that's stupid. Don't they know your birthday only happens once a year?! And this was his first birthday with you."
"I know (bff/n), but it doesn't really matter."
"Well I'm still coming to get you and we'll have a fun time. Just you and me. Like the good old days."
"Sounds good. I'll get dressed and see you when you get here. How long do you think you'll be?"
"30 minutes tops. See you soon!"
"See ya soon."
I hang up and walk to my room to decide what I should wear. It's my birthday so I might as well get a little dolled up. Even if it is just for me. I pull out my favorite look and decide it's good enough for today. By the time we're finished I hear a car pull up and blow the horn. I walk over to my window and see (bff/n) sitting outside flipping me off from inside her car. I shake my head and laugh while locking up and walking out side to meet her. I can hear her music blasting before I even reach the door. This is going to be a long night. But maybe just the distraction I need.
