Chapter Four
“So, what landing do you work in?” I asked, turning to look at Skye.
“Communications and Upper Construction,” Skye smiled. “Jamie works in First Aid and Lower Construction.”
“Cool,” I smiled back at her.
“I wonder what happens inside of the boss’ office,” Jack murmured.
“What do you mean?” Andrew looked up from his phone with interest.
“I’ve been hearing rumors,” Jack looked around as if he was checking if anyone was nearby, then leaning closer to the bonfire, “That when she calls people down, they get out like completely different people.”
“That’s bullshit,” Landon fixed his hair, putting his other arm around me. The air was warm but not heavy, the sky was clear as always. The stars shone bright and the moon was huge.
“No,” Jack looked over at him, his brow furrowing, “My sister got called in a couple days ago. She’s been like a zombie ever since!”
Jamie got up and sat next to Milo.
“What do you mean, like a zombie?”
“You know Kailee, she’s a loud, obnoxious little twerp. She’s been really nice to me and very quiet lately.”
“Well maybe its a phase?” I shrug, putting some hair behind my ear.
“Yeah, like when she went goth for like a week?” Landon agreed.
“No, it isn’t like that...” Jack’s voice trailed off.
Skye sunk into her seat.
“If Mrs. W had been doing that, then why hasn’t she done it to me? Why hasn’t she called me in yet, Jack? I’ve been working here for 2 years, why hasn’t she called me in?”
Jack stared at his shoes.
Landon looked into the bonfire. He seemed to be hypnotized by the dancing flames, licking at the air and devouring the wood we left for it. I wrapped my arm around his waist and put my head on his shoulder.
I felt Jamie’s eyes on me.
I looked up at her, and saw that she was staring the crap out of me. Her blue eyes would’ve burned a hole through my skull if she had laser vision.
I stared her in the eyes boldly. There was a fire in her eyes that I couldn’t recognize. I just turned and laid my head onto Landon’s chest. I closed my eyes and let myself relax. I felt his lips press up against my head. I smiled.
I guess that’s when I assumed we were dating.
I guess that’s when he assumed we were dating too.
But worse, I guess that’s when Jamie assumed we were dating.
I woke up in my bedroom the next morning. I was tucked underneath the covers very lightly. I was still in my clothes from the night before, but my sandals were taken off my feet and placed next to my bed.
“Eve?” I groaned, stretching to wake myself up.
“Good morning, Hannah.” Eve whirred quietly, the ceiling glowing softly.
“Who brought me home yesterday?” I asked, rubbing my eyes.”
“That boy you brought yesterday. He carried you home.”
“Oh, well that was nice of him.”
“Are you two in a relationship?” Eve asked, her metallic voice obviously showing interest in Landon.
“Maybe, I mean, I don’t know.”
Eve tittered.
“What?” I asked, my brow furrowing.
“Nothing, Hannah. Would you like me to play some music?”
I nodded, finally setting my feet onto the floor and getting up.
“Another day, another life, passes by just like mine, it’s not complicated...”
I smiled. Ed Sheeran had to be one of my favorite old artists. Autumn Leaves was my favorite.
“Eve, pull out my uniform for me, please?”
The closet whirred and I knew she understood. I got up and walked to the bathroom to clean off my makeup and wash my face. I put on my eyeliner and lipgloss and combed the waves from last night out of my hair. I walked into my shower and cleaned the saltwater and sand from myself.
I walked out and let Eve blow dry my hair so it was pin straight again. I put it up to my usual high ponytail and my bangs falling down to my face. I brushed my teeth and changed into my uniform like any other day.
I walked to the bus stop like any other day.
I sat next to Landon, like any other day.
“Hey,” I smiled at him.
“Hi,” He grinned back.
“So, last night was fun...”
“Yeah, it was...” He sighed.
“So, are we...?”
“I was going to ask you the exact same thing.”
I sighed and bit my lip.
“Well... do you want to be?” He asked nervously.
“Well, yeah. I’d like to get to know you first, though.”
He nodded and smiled.
“Well how can I turn you down with a smile like that?” I sighed, smiling.
We pulled up to the building for a pleasant surprise. Mrs. W was standing there, stiff as a board, waiting for us. Her nose was scrunched up, as always, and her lips were pulled tightly back into a small frown.
I watched her eyes scan the crowd and stop at someone two people over. She was small and lanky, with nervous eyes and trembling fingers. Mrs. W’s eyes narrowed, zoning in on the nervous girl. I watched as she whispered something to the huge, bulky guards next to her.
Two guards made their way to the girl slowly. Almost dramatically. They seemed to make eye contact with everyone in the crowd.
The nervous girl was shaking, looking urgently for an escape that just wasn’t there. She was trapped.
Cornered.
The two men grabbed her by the arms, almost dragging her to the front of the crowd. The blood flushed from her face.
She opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came out.
Not a single word escaped from her lips.
Mrs. W. whispered something to the guards, who in turn dragged the girl around the back of the building until we couldn’t see them.
We all stared at the boss. She was still in the same position she had been when we first arrived.
Something flashed in her eyes that I didn’t recognize.
Something I wasn’t sure I wanted to find out.
