The breeze blows restlessly around them, knocking loose curls into Harry's vision as he stares up at Boo. Her sad eyes stay focused on the lake, the clouds, the grass-anything but him. Grief radiates from her; a lonely lighthouse in an empty sea, dimmed by an impenetrable fog.
He wants to tell her it's okay to break down around him and be vulnerable. He's just not sure how. What words are there to heal the pain she holds?
He monitors her closely, admiring her profile and the way she speaks despite her obvious tiptoeing around the full depth of her misery. He wishes he had more things to tell her about Martha; better comforting words to say besides the cliched "it isn't your fault" line.
And then she says something that breaks his heart.
"It should have been me."
Those words are difficult to hear. He can't imagine how much harder it must be for her to say them aloud. Beneath his sorrow for her and his desire to be more comforting, he still admires the way she's opening up to him. He can appreciate the sense of trust she's showing him. It makes him want to know more about her; to be around her more. He craves to become a part of her life, to be the steady presence she's obviously longing for.
If she is a dandelion, he'll be the soil she's anchored in.
And in the back of his mind, he already knows that if there were any reason for him to come out of the shadows of his past, he's found it in her.
