Adriana sat bolt upright in bed with her head hammering. She had been dreaming about what had happened earlier that day, like she needed any more reminders.
She had walked into the large dining hall for dinner and was trying to find somewhere to sit, for a girl with no friends this wasn’t an easy task. She had decided to sit opposite a boy she didn’t really know.
“Hello, I’m Adriana.” She had said politely. The boy just looked at her with a look of disgust in his eyes.
“Get away from me freak!” He had yelled loudly, slamming his hand on the table, which made Adriana jump the height of herself. Adriana got up nervously and looked around the hall. Everyone was staring at her. The boy started laughing at her and then everyone joined in. As she looked around at them all anger boiled up inside her, anger more intense than she had ever felt before. She felt her face turn a deep shade of red out of fury. She was about to scream at them all when something much more shocking happened. The boy who had started laughing at her first started coughing and spluttering. He clutched at his throat as he choked. One by one the other children started doing the same, they were all desperately gasping for air. Adriana backed into the wall as she watched the horrific scene. Why wasn’t she choking too?
“What’s going on?” Mrs. Chambers asked as she walked into the room. She gasped when she realized that the children were choking.
“Help!” She screamed. She ran over to the nearest child, a five-year-old girl, and shaking her.
“What the hell is happening?” She cried as the girl’s knees buckled and she collapsed to the floor. Mrs. Chambers ran over to the boy who had stared choking first as other adults sprinted into the room and ran towards random children. The children were all collapsing by now, the younger they were the quicker they were collapsing.
“Peter! What is happening to you?” Mrs. Chambers screamed, shaking the boy’s shoulders. Peter stared past Mrs. Chambers at Adriana; his eyes were filled with terror. He raised a quivering hand and pointed his finger towards Adriana. Mrs. Chambers spun round, her face the picture of confusion. By the time she turned back to Peter he was on the ground too.
“They’re dead, they’re all dead!” One of the cooks said as she looked sadly down at the face of a three-year-old boy.
“What happened Adriana?” Mrs. Chambers asked. She looked scared now, but she wasn’t just scared because the children were dead, she was scared of Adriana.
