Adrianna backed away from Mrs. Chamber’s frightened glare and ran straight up to the room she shared with 3 other girls, or rather had shared. Those girls were lying dead in the dining room, not a breath left in their bodies.
Why had she not been affected by the strange blight that had claimed the lives of every other child in the orphanage? Adriana couldn’t help but think that she might have had something to do with it, but how was that possible? For as long as she could remember strange things had happened around her. Doors would open before she had even reached out her hand, things out of her reach would fall into her hand without encouragement. Before this incident the strangest had been when her school had went on fire. Adriana was trapped behind a wall of flames but they parted for her and she was able to walk through. The flames licked her body but she couldn’t feel them at all.
Adriana knew that things like this weren’t normal, but she couldn’t figure out how she was doing them!
Around 10 minutes after she had escaped to her room Adriana heard a small knock on her door.
“Adriana. My name is DCI Casper, can I come in?” A man’s voice asked through her door. Adriana opened the door to see a very tall man towering over her. He must have been in his late 40s. The man walked into the room, followed by a younger female officer.
“Do you know what happened to them?” Adriana asked. There was no sadness in her voice; she couldn’t pretend that she would miss those children at all.
“No, we were hoping you could help us with that, can you tell us what you saw?” He said in a soft voice.
“They just started choking, I don’t know how or why. Then one by one they fell to the ground.” Adriana said, the horror clear in her usually sweet voice.
“It’s ok, you’re safe Adriana.” He said soothingly.
“What do you think caused it?” Adriana asked, her grey eyes were wide as she asked this, terrified of the answer.
“We’re not sure yet, but we are going to call in some specialists, maybe they will have the answer.” He said. DCI Casper headed towards the door, looking disappointed.
“Get some sleep Adriana, I dare say these specialist will want to talk to you.”
