Fragmented Grace
Prologue
Arielle Wright
"The police are looking for you."
I didn't so much as glance to the side when I was confronted with new company. After all, I didn't need to. I already knew who he was.
"I realize," I replied emotionlessly. My pace quickened, and his did as well to match mine.
"Where do you plan to go?" His eyes were on my face, begging for mine to meet his gaze, but I remained passive with no intention of doing so.
He grabbed my arm when I didn't answer, and pulled me to a stop. I was forced to meet his amber eyes, earnest and full of concern, probably for my well-being. It was funny how a week ago he couldn't have cared less about how I was.
"Do you even have somewhere in mind?"
I nodded cautiously. "It's not something I plan to tell anyone though." His grip still held me, but only because I let him.
"Why not? Ar, why did you run?" I looked away from him; his face was full of too much emotion.
"Why do you care?" With a sigh, he released me and threaded his fingers through his auburn hair, only to grab my hand afterwards. I was tempted to rip it away, and perhaps run, but for some unknown reason I couldn’t. We had been intimate, once. It was possible he still harbored feelings for me, but I wasn't the type to go breaking someone's heart too roughly.
"I know I've never been the nicest person to you, but I care about you more than anything. Will you come back with me?" A glance at his expression revealed the complexity of his words. Yes, he felt bad for abusing our relationship of two years, and really it wasn't all his fault since he'd been abused by his family for much longer, but he still meant it every time he had claimed he loved me.
It wasn't enough. At least, not for me.
"I'm not like you, Reid. I don't belong here."
His reply was quiet, with the whisper of defeat tied into his voice. "Then where do you belong?"
I shrugged and averted my eyes. "That's what I'm going to figure out."
