Chapter 5
Arielle Wright
The slip of paper in my hands scared me.
I know what you did, it read. There was no other discriminating features as to the origin of it. All that I knew was that I’d found it on my pillow when I’d finally gotten back to my dorm. Hades wasn’t back at that time, luckily, but the note continued to terrorize my mind as I sat there.
Was it talking about the things that happened before I left home? If so, I was already pretty haunted by my pasI didn’t need to have a larger boulder hanging over my head, ready to fall at any second. And honestly, I couldn’t see what else it could be relating to. I hadn’t done anything to break the rules too severely yet. Skipping first period once surely wasn’t that bad, especially when it was a simple accident due to that fact that my alarm didn’t go off on time. Hades had left early that morning so he had left me to sleep in.
After a long second thought, I folded the paper in half and dropped it in the trash on my way back out the door. It wasn’t something I needed to be too bothered by. Maybe it was just a prank to see how many people they could freak out.
Despite these thoughts, I still couldn’t help the drop in my stomach that returned when I reminded myself that it could end up being a lot more than a simple prank.
When I approached Lucia and Lucian’s room, laughter greeted me from beyond the door. The room had become their--and by their, I meant all of our newer friends-- favorite hang out. I wasn’t much of a social type, especially in groups, but I did find myself obligated to spend time with them. Often, I didn’t have anything better to do. I was still waiting for approval to leave from the principal, and it’d been a week since Mr. Crimson had shown me the document.
I entered their room without knocking, and was greeted by the various echoes of my friends’ voices once they noticed me before completely admitting me into their on-going conversation.
“Hi Arie,” Lucian began from on top of his sister’s mistake back. She was laying on her stomach on the floor, not casting any of her attention away from the phone within her hands. “How are you doing?”
I smiled at him as I took a spot on the couch next to Hades, who had Thorne the cat resting contently on his lap. “I’m doing okay; thank you. How is your cushion?”
His head tilted towards the ground as he regarded Lucia. “She’s doing good, too, as far as I can tell,” he responded and tapped on her screen, causing her to cry out. She kicked his side. However, she didn’t make him get off, which either shower her true affection for him or her complete laziness. I wasn’t sure which.
“Is this everyone for today?” I asked Hades, who nodded for an answer. It was unusual to see so few in there, actually.
“Well, Morgan was here for a bit but then he left. Said he had a meeting with Mr. Sparks or something. But otherwise, this is it for today. I don’t think Ethanael will be coming either, because he’s working on a project.” His hand repeatedly swung over Thorne’s body from her head to the tip of her tail until deciding to remain on her side where he had received the most purring as thanks.
