Chapter 4

Arielle Wright

“I didn’t realize you had a cat,” Hades said as he stroked the creature’s fur. We were all holed up in Lucia and Lucian’s room for the afternoon, we being Ethanael, Lucia, Lucian, Hades, a new recruit named Zsofe, and I.

“I didn’t realize you could have a cat here, until Lucia brought her,” Lucian replied with a charming smile aimed at his twin. She rolled her eyes at him, and proceeded to avoid his gaze.

“So what, guys? I’m sure a lot of people have pets here.” Lucia offered us all a glare. “Remind me why we all had to use our room? Hades’ room is just as spacious as ours.” I took note of the statement that implied the room wasn’t shared.

“But yours is on the first floor, instead of the third. Less distance, Ethanael explained, taking a seat on the sofa besides the already seated Hades. The cat took up the rest of the available room on the couch, leaving the rest of us to find other places to sit. Luckily, their room had been well furnished by them since they had arrived, so they had quite a few more options than we would’ve had in my room. Zsofe took the edge of one of the beds, after asking, and the twins took the two recliners they had.

“Okay, this is what I heard.” Ethanael leaned forward, an indication of his intrigue in the conversation he was going to be partaking in with us. I had learned that he wasn’t much of a gossip, much like the rest of us, but when he found something good he couldn’t help but share it with us. And when it came to staying informed on the school’s most important news, I considered it a blessing.

“There was a girl who disappeared the other day, after A.P.T. School officials claim that kids sometimes freak out while they’re here, and run off, but haven’t looked into it other than that. However, one of the other students, her roommate in face, saw her walking into the woods on the backside of the school. Then there was another girl who disappeared last week after the first day of classes. Neither one has returned yet.”

I listened attentively as Ethanael rambled on to other evidence I didn’t think was too relevant at the time. Two missing girls so early in the school year? And if things were as he described then the academy wasn’t taking it seriously. I had to wonder why.

I rose to my feet, bringing the attention to myself for the first time in the conversation.

“I have to go; I just remembered I have previous plans,” I announced, and left the room with a chorus of goodbyes trailing behind me. No questions were asked of me, just acceptance.

My feet carried me to the elevator, which assisted me up two entire floor, and over to my room, plus one. I stood in front of his door, hesitant to knock. He had claimed that his room was open if I ever needed help, but did I really want his help? It wasn’t like there was anything wrong with me specifically. I just wanted to be able to help find the missing girls, and had a little curiosity on the subject.

Suddenly, a tap came on my shoulder. I shifted my weight around to allow me to see who had done it, and discovered Morgan behind me.
