*****Prologue*****

The Doctor was a time lord. The last Time Lord.  He traveled the universe, wallowing in self-pity, all alone, for years. Until one day, he fell to earth, abandoned by his ship, and he fell in love. He married, for the second time, to a human, named Rose Tyler. She fell pregnant, and while he had been a father before, he was nervous. She died during childbirth, but not before giving birth to a beautiful baby girl. She looked nothing like either of her parents, but there would be a time when the Doctors looks would match her own. She was a time lord as well, but her true species was hidden. Only if she was reunited with a T.A.R.D.I.S would she truly become a time lord. The Doctor raised his girl until she reached the age of 2. Then, he had a vision. It was time to reunite with his T.A.R.D.I.S, but that was no place for a baby. So he did the only thing he could think of. He left her at an orphanage, only with a note that said,

"I'll be back for her."

Chapter One (Fifteen years later)

"BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BE-" I slammed  my alarm clock's off button. It was six o'clock in the morning, but I had to get up for work. My tiny bed at the orphanage was not big enough. Ever since I was two, I had been in and out of foster homes, and I was even adopted, before they finally stuck me here a year ago. I guess my dirtbag parents got sick of me. Probably because of my Anemia. I popped two iron pills into my mouth and then  checked the calender. December 12th, my birthday. Uh oh. My boyfriend was going to go psychotic. I didn't care though. Just another year. Only one left, and then I was free. I worked at a diner in New York, minimum wage. I pulled on my leggings and a long shirt that said, "If You're Reading this, You're too Close." I pulled on my ratty old converse and slipped out the door. I cautiously made my way down the stairs. There were holes the size of a foot, and you'd cut yourself pulling your leg out. I didn't grab any food, I was too fat. I pushed the door open and walked the mile to Shimmies, the diner I worked at.      Once i got there, I slipped on my checkered apron and white blouse. My shift was 7-3, and there were about ten people. I made my way around, and everyone gave me their orders. It all went fine, until I got too one man, sitting with a redheaded girl. They were giggling together. "Hello, and what may I get for you today?" The girl looked up at me and glared. "I'll have the Breakfast Bash with an Orange juice." Huh. British. I nodded and wrote it down. "And for you sir?" I looked up at him. For the first time, he noticed me, and his face turned to one of fear. "What? Did I grow a horn?" I mimed a horn with my finger. He buried his face in his face in his menu. "Just a coffee." He mumbled. Jeesh. "Okay, it'll be right out for ya'll." He was British, too. "Dumb cow." I heard the girl mutter. Oh no, i'm so sad! Note my sarcasm. I was used to name calling, it's what I grew up with. I got their food and brought it out. I was walking away when the man cleared his throat. "So, where are you from?" I looked to Ruby, the manager. She nodded. I placed the tray at my hip, balancing dirty dishes. "Um, i'm not sure." Who knows?

"Well, where did you grow up?"

"Oh, you know, around."

"How old are you? Who are your parents? Why do you work here? Do you have a boyfriend?" I shifted uncomfortably. "Um, I have to go."

"No, stay." He grabbed my arm. I pulled out my mace and sprayed him. "OW! WHAT DID YOU DO THAT FOR?"

"YOU GRABBED ME! I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE, SIR!" They stood up and left. I looked to Ruby. She nodded, as if to say, 'Good Job.' I sighed and checked the clock. Two thirty. "You can leave early Anette. Happy birthday." I smiled and nodded. I left my uniform in my locker and jogged out the door, sliding in the sheet rain. No sign of creepy British guy. He looked a bit like me, actually. Dark brown, almost black hair, brown eyes, strong features-no. Shut up mind. Nobody likes you, anyways. Jim, my boyfriend, was waiting for me. I smiled and jogged to him. He let me under his umbrella and greeted me with a kiss. Finally, we pulled away, and he slipped something into my hands. It was a jewelry box. I eyed him suspiciously and popped it open. It was a wedding ring! He could tell I was about to freak out, so he laughed. "Anette Mariyanne, please, I want you to marry me, and I want you to say yes. But I don't want you to marry me today, or tomorrow. I want you to just promise me, that when you're ready, you will. So, will you promise me?" I was so happy, I was crying. "YES!" He laughed and slipped the ring on my finger. It was beautiful and simple, just like our love. Some may say, seventeen was too young to be engaged, but Jim was my best friend for five years, we had been dating for three. He took my hand in his. "You know, I wasn't completely sure you weren't going to mace me." I laughed. "I did mace a guy today. He was being all creepy." He laughed. "That's my girl." I smiled as we walked. "Where are we going?" He smiled back. "It's a surprise. I was going to propose at our destination, but I know how much you love the rain." I smiled. "You know me too well J." He growled playfully. "I know, Annie." I sighed. We both hated those nicknames. After a while, I realized where we were going. "Babe, I can't afford that place. Neither can you!" He grinned. Its your birthday, and my promotion." I gasped. "Awwwww! Thanks Jim! I'm so happy for you!" He picked me up and spun me around, causing him to loose grip on the umbrella, causing it to fly away. We were soaked in a minute. I giggled and started running to The Chateau, the fanciest restaurant in town.

Chapter Two

When we got there, we were swimming pools. The sharply dressed hostess looked at us like we were murdering people. I nudged Jim in the ribs, and he got it. He straightened, like he was dressed in a suit. I linked my arm with his. "Um, table for two please, I'm Mr. Jim Shayse." I held on to him as we pretended we weren't soaking wet.

"U...u..um, rright aaaway sssir. Fffffollow mmme." She was stuttering madly. We waited until she had taken pur drink orders and walked away to laugh. After five minutes of hysterical laughter, I left to dry myself. When I returned, Jim did the same. We were still madly under-dressed, and received dirty looks. We were giggling all through our meals, and didn't stop until we reached the orphanage. I gave Jim a kiss and smiled. "Thanks Jim. Your the best. I love you!" He smiled. "I love you too. Anything for my fiancee." I smiled and walked through the door, where my mood was immediately turned by the sound of Marhta, the matron. "Get in here cow, and start your work!" I sighed and trudged to the kitchen. We set a date, because I was ready. December 25th, next year. I would be legal. At that time, i'd move in with Jim. By the time I was done cleaning the entire house and putting all the kids to bed, it was Midnight. I flopped on my bed and immediately fell asleep.

*The next morning*

I woke up to someone shaking me. "What?" I mumbled. Martha smacked me. "Downstairs, ten minutes." I sighed and clambered out of bed. I didn't have time to shower, but I was still clean from the rain. I dresses in a plain blue shirt and a pair of loose jeans. I slipped on my ever present, ratty old converse, and went to the mirror. I had bags under my eyes, and there was no life in their dull brown color. I brushed through my ratty hair and put it up in a loose bun. Not in the mood to impress, I didn't put on any make-up. But I did keep on my ring.  made my way down the stairs, only to gasp. It was the man from the Shimmies. "You. How did you find me?" He laughed. "No, seriously, how did you find me?" Martha smacked me. "Behave! He's just adopted you! Your bi-" The man cut her off with a nervous laugh. "You. Tell me this. I look about twenty, I act about twenty, so how did you find me?" He laughed again. "I just spoke to Ruby."

"Dang." I turned to go back up the stairs, but he grabbed my hand. I went to pull it away, but he saw my ring. "Is that an engagement ring?" I got my hand back. "Yes..." I dragged out the 'E.' He screwed up his face. "You're too young to marry!"

"Not next year! I'll be down soon." I trudged up the treacherous stairs and slammed my bedroom door. Why did he want to adopt me. Oh, his girlfriend will have a field day. That's okay, though. I mean, every word was true. I put all my clothes in the brown suitcase the orphanage gave me, and I put my pictures, jewelry, and wallet in my American Eagle tote that I used as a purse. I walked down the stairs, and all the kids flocked me. "Where are you going Annie? Why do you have your bag? What about Jim? Who's that guy? He looks like you? What about what happened last time? I'll miss you Annie, don't go!" The kids were sobbing. I gave the man my bags and worked on the kids. There were eight of them, the oldest being seven, the youngest three. The seven year old, both five year old's, and the six year old I set down coloring. The rest, I put down for a nap. Ten minutes later, I was done. I grabbed my stuff from the man, whose mouth was agape, and turned to Martha. "You. You've abused me physically and mentally, and I can't stand to see it happen to these kids. So get your crap together, and listen good: GROW UP! Enjoy doing everything yourself, and if you can't, don't try." She was as speechless as the doctor. "Look, I don't have a free hand here, but have I grown a horn?" She shook her head. "Good. Goodbye Martha, and I will miss the woman I knew." I turned and left through the creaky door, soon to be followed by this man, whose name I did not know, and was very suspicious of.
