"Why do you want to join us?" Farley spat, eyeing the young prince suspiciously.
Maven signed. "For my friend. Thomas. He's a red that I met in the war. He changed everything for me, gave me a whole new perspective. I want to fight for him." Mavens heart dropped at the word "friend" but it was for the best.
"Did he die?" Mare asked in a quiet voice.
"No. Almost but no. Once my time was up, I was able to transfer him to the palace. He's a guard. I don't get to see him much, if ever, and it's not the best job. But, it's better than the battlefield." Mavens eyes dropped to the floor.
Everyone stood quiet.
"Fine." Farley croaked. "You can join us. But one wrong move, and I won't hesitate to shoot." She said, still glaring at maven.
"Of course." Maven said, bowing his head to the general.
After some strategizing, the guard left, and maven and mare headed back into the palace.
As they got near their rooms, maven stopped.
"Is everything okay?" Mare questioned.
Maven thought for a second. "Yeah- I mean yes. I just remembered I have some unfinished business. You know. Prince stuff." He said with a small smile. "Go on to bed. I'll meet you in the morning."
Mare looked suspicious but decided not to question him any further. "Okay." She said softly, with a small smile of her own.
Once mare had turned the corner, Maven started speed walking towards the guards end of the palace. He knew it was dangerous. With the cameras. With his thoughts. His mind was racing, and with his mother, that was never a good thing.
But in that moment, he didn't care. It had been months. He just had to see him.
He arrived at the quarters and was met with the guard standing watch out front.
"Prince Maven." He said as he bowed, shocked by Mavens sudden appearance.
"Hello sir. I'm sorry for the late visit but I request the presence of Sir Thomas. Please, send him to my quarters as soon as possible."
"Of course your Majesty." And with a final bow, the guard set off to retrieve Thomas.
Maven started walking back to his room, his mind completely blank. When he arrived. He sat on his bed with his head in his hands, just thinking. Panicking. Thinking.
After what felt like an eternity, there was a knock at the door.
Maven shot up and opened it.
There stood Thomas. Still groggy from being woken up, but regal and put together as the guards always are.
"Hello your Majesty. I was informed that you requested my presence." Thomas said.
"Yes. I did." Maven spoke, quiet and somewhat scared.
But he pushed his fear away, and with that, Maven pulled Thomas into his room by the collar of his shirt, the door slamming behind them, as maven pressed his lips to his.
