Everyone Says

His dead-looking gray eyes
That he hates so much
Only pull me in closer.

His messy raven hair
That he claims to never get right
Looks so soft and touchable to me.

I feel tempted to play with it
And run my hands through it
Despite what everyone says.

Everyone says
He's cold and distant,
But that makes me want to be the one
To warm his frozen heart
And allow him to feel.

Everyone says
He looks for attention,
But that makes me want to figure out
Why he's not getting enough attention
From those he cares about.

Everyone says
He doesn't really care about anyone,
But that makes me want to be the one
To teach him how to show his care,
Because I know he does.

Everyone says
He's a jerk who messes around,
But that makes me want to defend him
From those who unfairly
Mistreat him.

I see through it all.
I see the way
Assumptions are made about him
Without people thinking about
What he feels and thinks.

Looking at the world through his eyes
Makes me want to protect him.
It makes me want to be his
One true friend
Amidst everyone misjudging him.

We don't need to be anything more
Than simply friends
As long as I be his support
In his world of loneliness.

And maybe,
Just maybe,
He can grow to be my support as well.
