Elsa couldn't understand why her parents popped up in her mind. It's been years since she's thought of them. After not having to conceal herself from her people, she's managed to push away the thoughts of what they had told her to do. She'e managed to banish the ideals they had advised her to go through.
Elsa knew she couldn't complete blame them for her previous fear. She was the one who allowed her fear to push her to such measures. It was her who had driven her parents to think that way. There could have been another way to do everything, another way to face her powers without having to go through all the pain.
"Hey, what's with the frown?" a familiar voice asked as he leaned beside her over the railing. They were at her castle on the North Mountain, looking over the forest. It was no longer winter but it managed to stay solid throughout the years- another unexplainable logic of her powers.
Elsa forced a smile when she faced him, her eyes taking in his friendly face. "Nothing, nothing." Jack cocked a brow at her, obviously not falling for her little lie. She let out a small laugh, facing forward and blankly staring at the scene. Like always, Jack didn't push, allowing a comfortable silence to fall over them.
"Jack?" she said softly, tilting her head in his direction. He hummed in response, fingers tapping the railing in a rhythmic pattern. "Do you remember your parents?"
Jack was quiet, his fingers stopping in their tapping for a beat before continuing. "Sometimes."
"Oh."
"Why?"
"No reason." She stepped back, walking back inside the palace. Her gaze stayed on the floor but she heard Jack follow her in. "My parents used to play with Anna and I when we were kids." The tip of her shoe traced the intricate pattern of snowflakes that Jack had embedded into the floor.
"They weren't always afraid of your powers?"
Elsa shook her head, her fingers twirling her hair around in circles. They never approached the subject of their parents before. She never knew whether it was because it was still a touchy subject for them or because it just never came up in conversation.
"As a child, they were very cautious about my powers. They didn't think it was much of a big deal because I was sort of like a miracle child to them. Before me, they had several miscarriages and when I came out, alive and healthy, the powers were merely a bonus." Elsa glanced up at Jack. He was staring at her thoughtfully, his head tilted a little forward, lips pulled up slightly at the corners.
"When Anna was born, they had me decorate the ballroom for her little birthday party. I was so excited when it turned out well for a three year old."
"You decorated a ballroom?" he gasped exagerratedly, hands flying to cover both his cheeks for emphasis.
Elsa barked out a brief laugh and rolled her eyes. "Yes, I, as a mere three year old decorated a ballroom."
"You know I'm just kidding," he said, walking up to nudge her lightly in the side. Elsa smiled up at him as he slid an arm around her waist and pulled her into his side. He placed a kiss on the crown of her head. She closed her eyes at the contact, her smile widening softly. Relishing in his warmth, his presence, him, she sighed and snuggled into his side. His other arm wrapped around her. "If I had powers when my parents were alive, they would've been the same, just slightly more worried. I was a pretty daring kid and I always brought my sister so she could experience the fun with me."
Elsa tilted her head up to meet his gaze. He pressed a chaste kiss to her lips and they pulled away with wistful smiles on their faces. "My parents would've liked you."
Jack cocked a brow. "Of course they would," he replied with a haughty grin. One of his hands rose to cup her cheek and his thumb brushed her bottom lip lightly. "Why wouldn't they? I'm the king of fun."
The way the palm of his hand held her face and the soft caress of his thumb made her feel secure. Her eyes crinkled happily and she jokingly quipped back, "You're the guardian of fun, Jack."
"Ah, but I'm your king." His blue eyes shined brightly, loving their banter.
Elsa tipped her head back, lips pursing in thought. She hummed, "That is true." She returned her gaze to his. "After all, what's a king without his queen?"
Jack's lips turned up to a wide grin, his arm tightening around her waist and pulling flush against him. The hand cupping her cheek slid into her hair and pulled it out of its braid. Their foreheads touched and gazes still locked, he responded, "Nothing."
