Emily was crying. The Doctor had explained that the Cybermen didn't kill their victims, but death would be a better fate. Her parents had been robbed of their emotions, and their humanity, and had been turned into one of those nightmares in silver armor. She shuddered, recalling The Doctor's worried face as he had explained this. Then there was The Doctor. She wasn't sure what it was, but he gave off a sort of calming aura. She didn't know him, but she knew for a certainty she trusted him.
The Doctor was still mentally kicking himself for not arriving sooner and saving the girl's parents. He couldn't look at her without being overwhelmed with guilt. It was his fault they had been assimilated, wasn't it? He flinched as Emily asked the question he had been dreading.
"Doctor? What do I do now? I'm alone. Can I come with you?" Emily asked quietly, wiping the tears from her eyes. The Doctor slowly turned to look at her, thinking of a way to tell her without hurting her feelings.
"I've travelled with people before, good people, but I always lose them. Not again. I refuse to lose another person. I can't bear the thought of losing someone else." he said, quietly at first, then louder.
He spun around to face her, face shining with tears. She saw him and looked away, slightly embarrassed. She felt horrible.
'Wait, its not my fault he's crying. I asked an innocent enough question.' she chided herself mentally, but despite her mental reassurances, she couldn't help but to feel pity for him. She had never met him before, but she felt like they had been acquaintances, friends if you like, her entire life. She knew she could follow him across the Earth and he would allow no harm to come to her. She continued to glare at him. The Doctor returned her stare. They remained like that for some time.
Finally, The Doctor sighed and stood up. He turned towards where the TARDIS was parked. He motioned for her to follow him. Smiling, she jumped to her feet and followed, knowing that her life was about to change big time.
