I Want Him Back (Mare x Maven DRAFT)

Chapter Three

Mare's P.O.V.

"I love you so much, Mare." Cal says warmly, his hands resting on the small of my back. My hands rest on his shoulders, tracing his muscular figure as we rock back in forth in a circular motion, our feet moving in unison.

I smile, gazing into his glowing amber eyes. "I'm quite fond of you as well," I reply, resting my head on his chest as the world moves around us. The setting sun shines on the balcony as we dance together, turning my skin a beautiful bronze color. Cal's is a light gold.

"I wish this night would never end." Cal murmurs, coming to a stop at the edge of the balcony. I gaze up at him, taking in his sharp jawline and handsome face.

"I know." I say, grinning happily.

Cal leans down, as if to kiss me, but then pauses, his lips brushing mine. "But all good things must come to an end." he whispers.

I have no time to reply as Cal forcibly shoves me off the balcony, making me scream in horror. He watches me fall, his face shifting into that of Maven's. A wicked smile creeps onto his face as I drop closer to the ground below with each passing second. My stomach lurches as I continue to fall for what seems like an eternity.

Falling, falling, falling.

"Mare? Mare, wake up dear."

I open my eyes to find myself laying in the grass with Maven staring down at me. It is difficult to see him in the dark, but I can tell his features are full of concern. He holds one of my hands in his own, kneeling beside me, and arches an eyebrow as I meet his gaze.

I look around slowly, taking in my surroundings. It is still very dark out, though I can make out figures of vegetation and trees. A cloudless sky full of stars shines above. The motorcycle sits nearby, almost impossible to see through the darkness, not to mention a layer of fog.

"Where are we?" I ask, my voice somewhat panicked.

Maven squeezes my hand slightly, trying to reassure me. It does anything but.

"The motorcycle ran out of fuel... so I stopped in this meadow and set you down here. You were so tired you must have not woken up. We will have to walk the rest of the way," he says, sighing.

"You didn't think to fill the tank before you left?"

"Mare, you must understand that when I saw your lightning, it was impossible for me to think about anything but you." he replies smoothly.

I feel my face blush. Lucky for me, Maven doesn't seem to notice in the dark.

"So now I must ask, what were you dreaming about? It must be something very bad, for you to be screaming so loudly." he says calmly. His ice blue irises are wide with unease, making the dark circles under his eyes even more visible. I try to remember my dream, but my head aches far too much to think about anything. I feel as if I haven't slept in weeks.

"Could we talk about it in the morning?" I murmur, yawning heavily. The manacles around my wrists have taken all my energy.

"Of course, anything for you Mare." Maven says quietly, making my face heat once more. It confuses me why Maven has suddenly started showing so much kindness towards me, after the rude things he's done to me in the past. I don't question him.

We fall asleep side by side, and all I can hope is that I don't wake to find Maven gone in the morning.

I can only pray I don't have another dream.

I wake up early the next morning, just before sunrise. I sit up, glancing at the king who lays beside me. Maven is still asleep, probably worn out from weeks of sleepless nights. It is amazing, that just being near me makes him sleep more soundly than anything. I could kill him anytime I please, wrap my hands around his throat and squeeze as hard as possible until he suffocates. Maven knows I would never do such thing.

He knows me much too well.

I stand up, stretching my now sore body. Sleeping on the ground is not exactly the most pleasant experience. Tall green grass surrounds us, hiding us from anything that might be around.

Just letting everyone know, this chapter is not finished yet! I'm trying not to be the kind of person that writes super short chapters. Just wanted to get something out there so ya'll won't think I gave up on this story! As always, hope you like it so far!
