Joe had just climbed into his private car when his phone had lit up with an incoming FaceTime call from her. He debated if he should answer it or not. He thought she might see the background of the city lights and recognise that he was in New York and then his surprise would be ruined. He had told her that he was going back to his home just outside of London, which she knew was in the countryside, so he knew that she would definitely know something was happening if she saw bright lights when he should have been in a more rural area. Taylor seemed to figure everything out and nothing could be kept a secret from her. So far, his plan had worked, he was just hoping that it wouldn't fall right at the last hurdle. He decided to answer it, just hoping that she would be too tired to even notice what was going on. Taylor was going to bed so he knew that it would be a quick call, she has waited up all this time just to say hello to him once he had landed, meaning that she was exhausted and could fall asleep at any moment.
His heart longed for her when he saw her face on his phone and he ached to be able to see her again, to be with her. "Hey, my angel" he spoke towards the phone after she had answered, wishing he was rather speaking to her in person rather than through the phone, but he would take what he could get, he couldn't complain though, it was only a short car ride until he was able to do just that. He could barely see her face as she was also surrounded in darkness, the light from her phone glowing onto her, illuminating her face slightly.
A small whispered reply came from her. Joe could tell that she was tired, her eyes were barely open and her voice was hoarse. It was nearly 1 am so he was surprised that she was still awake as long days of rehearsals consumed her time and he knew how hard she had been working to make sure this tour was absolutely perfect down to the last detail. Plus, the restless nights that she told him about when she couldn't sleep because her brain couldn't and wouldn't switch off. It worried him how exhausted she was, along with the fact that she would be so preoccupied in rehearsals that she would forget to eat just added to the problem. Around lunchtime, everyday, he would call her and remind her to eat, making sure that even though he couldn't physically be there to look after her, that he still was, even thousands of miles away. She would roll her eyes every time, thinking that he was overreacting and making a fuss out of nothing but deep down she loved just how much he cared for her.
Joe tried to keep the conversation short, he didn't want to keep her up any longer and he was going to see her in a couple of minutes anyway. But now the time had come and he was just around the corner from her, he was worried that he might be overstepping the boundaries of their new relationship, and slightly nervous that maybe she didn't want to see him, that he was rushing what they had. These feelings were irrational and he knew that but he still couldn't stop them running through his mind. Joe knew this especially because when they had video called each other only two days ago, her eyes had filled with tears slightly when his faced popped up on the phone which then overflowed into tears as she whispered "hello, I miss you quite terribly."
He had pulled up to her house and tried to bring the call to an end. The quicker it ended the quicker he was able to go and see her in person and fall asleep together. "I'll see you real soon, baby" he told her, a smirk on his face, knowing it would only be a few minutes, but Taylor did not see it as her eyes had drifted shut, finally succumbing to sleep. Joe let out a small laugh to himself, while ending their call. He thanked the driver and shuffled out of the car and walked around to the boot of the car, the cold night air sending a chill down his spine, spreading goosebumps across his body.
Joe was met by one of Taylors security guards, Brandon, who was in on the plan. They exchanged quick hellos and Joe was handed the keys to the front door. The security guards weren't meant to let anyone into their boss' house, but they knew they would be forgiven this time around. They didn't normally like to get involved with things like this, but they had never seen Taylor like this before, radiating happiness and being so carefree even though their jobs consisted of sneaking the couple in and out of places and away from the paparazzi.
