She brought the weapon up to her face, squinting one of her deep bluebell eyes into the rear sight of the gun.
'Come on Marinette, you can do this!' She told herself.
As soon as her finger trailed towards the trigger, she lost grip of the gun.
"Here," Adrien's hands clasped around hers, positioning them into a more secure grasp around the weapon.
His hands brushed against hers causing her cheeks to prick with heat.
She looked at him as he looked over her shoulder into the guns rear view. Their faces centimetres apart.
"There you go. Now you have a better grasp of it. Try it!" Adrien said, "Oh, and take a deep breath before you pull the trigger. It helps give you a better aim."
She did as she was told. Her finger hovered over the trigger as she let out a deep breath. As she pulled down on the trigger, the gun bounced back slightly from the impact of the bullet escaping it. It followed with a bang.
She watched in awe as the bullet whizzed towards the dummy's target- right in the centre.
"Woah." Adrien blinked, hardly believing his eyes.
"Officer Agreste! My gun needs reloading." A voice called from one of the other booths.
"I'll be back in a minute Marinette, let me just sort out this guys gun. Keep going with the target practise, you've had a good start!" The blonde officer assured as he backed out of her booth.
She nodded and turned back to the gun, recreating the position of her hands that Adrien left her in. She remembered what he'd said: "Take a deep breath." And she did just that.
She fired the pellet gun once again.
And again.
And again.
All perfect shots.
She looked up from her gun to see all of the bullet holes in the centre of the targets.
"Holy shit! Marinette you're sick at targets! I can't even get perfect shots." Marinette turned around to see Nino standing outside her booth, presenting an expression of literal awe to her.
"Haha thanks, Nino." She giggled, as she watched his mouth change from an 'o' to a smirk.
"Hey Callum! Come look at this." Nino shouted.
Marinette screwed her face as she watched the guy that made fun of her from before trundle into her booth with Nino.
"Watch Marinette's target skills." Nino ordered him.
Nino nodded at her, ushering her to do another perfect shot.
And a perfect shot she did. Turning around, Marinette couldn't help but giggle as she watched utter bewilderment wash over Callum's face.
"You're not still worrying that you walked into a hair salon are you?" Marinette smirked sarcastically.
Nino sniggered, "She got you there."
Callum did not look amused.
"You know Marinette, it's funny 'cause Callum hasn't even earned his gun yet- and he's been here for two weeks!" Nino mocked.
Marinette opened her mouth to laugh- but forced herself to stop when Callum's eyebrows furrowed and his fists tightened.
He grabbed Nino by the collar and dragged him close to his face.
"You think you're so funny, don't you?"
Callum spat as he brought his fist up to Nino's face, signalling a punching stance.
"Chill out dude, you were the one being rude to Marinette. Next time just don't be a douche." Nino argued, clearly standing his ground for her.
The whole ruckus was interesting more and more people, causing the other policemen to gather around. Including Adrien, who was about to jump in to try to settle it, until Marinette piped up.
"Let Nino down Callum. It was me that annoyed you in the first place so don't hurt Nino because of me. And Nino- as much as I appreciate you for trying to help me, I can handle it on my own thank you." And with that she grabbed Callum's arms and pulled them off of Nino.
Callum's eyes flickered between Marinette and Nino, most likely trying to process who he hated more, before walking back to his own booth to carry on with his practice.
Marinette looked at the crowd of men, all of them returning her gaze. They looked astounded that she'd been able to handle such a heated situation so well. Suddenly, one red haired guy at the back broke the silence by clapping.
"Well done Marinette, we were all sick of Callum. Thank God you put a stop to him." The other policemen nodded in agreement and followed with his clapping. Suddenly the room was filled with applause. Everyone was smiling at her, but only one smile caught her eye.
"Officer Agreste! Why is your department full of cheering men?" An angry Kim entered the room, banging the door on his way in.
The room went silent, everyone moping off back to their booths, someone even daring to mumble along the way: "Marinette should fix him."
Marinette turned and smiled at herself.
She picked up her gun and tried to refocus until she heard her name again. "We were actually cheering Marinette, she just handled a Callum tantrum and she's getting perfect shots." Adrien gushed to the Chief, he said it loud enough for everyone to hear, like he was showing her off.
She laughed internally. She figured she really liked Officer Agreste and could see herself being better friends with him.
She reminisced over his hands lightly stroking hers as he helped her hold the gun.
'Wait a second... Oh no, get Officer Agreste OUT of your head, Marinette!'
All of her thoughts were put on pause as she heard the Chief whisper her name to Officer Agreste. She turned her head, trying to get a grasp of what he could be saying about her- but as soon as she did so, the Chief noticed her watching and lowered his voice.
"But- Chief, she's as good as me!" she heard Adrien complain.
She watched as the Chief simply shook his head, stating "That's final." Before taking one last look at her and leaving the room.
'What were they saying about me? What is the Chief shaking his head to? What did Adrien ask him?'
Marinette jumped back into reality as she realised Adrien- Officer Agreste was walking over to her.
Adrien's POV:
I can't believe the Chief would be so- so cruel!
As soon as I got close enough to Marinette, her deep blue eyes lit up. She heard me say good things about her, she must think I have good news for her.
But it's in fact quite the opposite.
'Why do I have to be the one to tell her this? I don't wanna have to watch her pretty smile turn to a morbid frown.
Wait, did I just call Marinette pretty in my thoughts?'
"Officer Agreste?"
"Oh, uh.. Marinette! I er... Can we talk? At lunch?"
She smiled. "...Sure"
'What are you doing, Agreste? You should've told her then and there!
Why are you prolonging this?'
I watch as Marinette continually shoots directly into the target. Her midnight hair bouncing with every blast, her ocean eyes squinting into the guns point of view.
'Oh, So that's why. You like this girl.'
