Adrien's POV:
I wake up to Chloè's blonde hair under my chin. I'm resting my head on hers.
When did that happen? Did she cuddle up to me during the night?
I immediately roll over to the end of the bed and get up as quietly as I can, trying not to wake her. I don't want to face her again after last night. I don't even know what I'd say to her.I start to put my uniform on, pulling my shirt over my head, followed by my blazer.
"Adrikins..." a sleepy voice calls.
I turn around, to see Chloè watching me.
"Go back to sleep, it's 6:00am." I tell her.
She gets up and wraps her arms around my neck, resting her head on my shoulder. "No."
Oh my God. Is she trying to... seduce me into staying with her?
"Chloè..." I start, trying to conjure up an excuse to gently let her down.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay." Chloè whines.
"I'm sure I don't want to stay. Didn't you listen to anything I said last night?" I snap, as I unwrap her hands from around my neck.
Chloè doesn't say anything. She sits on the bed, stunned. I proceed with getting dressed and when I'm ready, she hugs my back and whispers, "Have a nice day."
A sense of pity washes over me, but I know letting my guard down would mean leading her on, so I just thank her and go on with my day.As I stroll down the town centre, I smell the same sweet scent of pastry that I had yesterday, it's a painful reminder that I haven't eaten breakfast, because my stomach starts to growl.
One measly croissant wouldn't hurt...
I look into the window of the bakery, a woman with short dark hair is putting a fresh batch of french toast on the display.
I try to tear my eyes away from the sweet treats as I make my mind up on what to buy.
I go to the bakery door, my hand reaching for the handle to open it, but it suddenly slams open- the little bell on the top of it ringing as a customer walks out. Or so I thought."Adr- Officer Agreste? What are you do-doing here?" The young woman with midnight pigtails stuttered.
I stand, shocked, staring into her bright blue eyes. The same blue eyes that fooled me into kissing Chloè yesterday. The same blue eyes that I wished belonged to the girl I kissed yesterday.
"Marinette?"There's a long pause.
Marinette scratches the back of her head as she waits for a reply.
"O-oh erm, well I was just going to grab something to eat, for breakfast, what about you?" I say awkwardly."I live here?" She nods her head to Nino's car waiting outside the bakery for her. "Here- I got some croissants for me and Nino before I left, you can have some, I'm sure he wouldn't mind sharing."
"I would so!" Nino shouts out of the car window, his voice high pitched and whiney. Marinette laughed and took some croissants out of the bag before pushing them into my hands.
Nino watched, with a look of disappointment washing over his face,
"I cant believe you'd give Adrien food before me! After all we've been through, Dupain-Cheng!""Shut up Nino, I gave you my best friends number last night! Speaking of- have you messaged her yet?" Marinette raised her eyebrows whilst getting in the car next to him, leaving me in the back on my own.
"What! Nino actually got a girls number?" I chuckle from the backseat, my mind finally clearing from last night.
"Whatever, pretty boy." Nino smirked whilst starting the car.
Narrators POV:
When they arrived at the police department, all the officers including the Chief were rushing to the police cars, every one of them turning the sirens on and speeding off."What happened?" Marinette asked worriedly.
"Oh no, Im not sure- but it must be serious" Adrien replied reaching for his walkie-talkie. He pressed the button on the side to receive the messages the other officers were sending.
'Officer Agreste to go to the town-square, along the side streets, theres been a suspected Akumatised victim.' The voice message read.
"Oh no." Nino grumbled. "I haven't been trained for this"
"You'll be fine, Nino." Adrien assured, however he was not in a calm state himself, not because of the intense case they were about to deal with though- but because Marinette couldnt come. And he had to tell her. Now.
"Marinette," Adrien swallowed. "Can I have a word, outside?"Adriens POV (again)
"Marinette, you- I- Im so sorry I couldn't tell you earlier but- you cant come with us this time. And quite frankly the Chief said he doesn't want you to do duties in public, ever,"
I look at the floor, unable to look her in the eyes.
"But I promise I WILL get the Chief to rethink this," I look up, our eyes meet, hers full of disappointment.
"I WILL give you just as important roles as the other officers, if not better. Because you- you are better than any of us."Marinette opens her mouth to speak, but nothing comes out.
She did this again, but this time, she spoke:
"Then shouldn't I be on this duty? With the rest of you? I may have only joined the police department last week, but I feel I have earned the Chief and your trust whilst performing well in all of my classes. Ive been working so hard trying to gain respect, just so I could feel equal to the others somehow! This was supposed to be my first mission. I cant believe I have to miss it." Her face crumpled. I hated seeing her like this.
But she was right. And there was nothing I could do.
Dont just stand for this, Agreste. Do something!"You're right Marinette. Ill get you on duty by next week, latest."
I put my hand on her shoulder.
Marinettes eyes widened, and she stiffened.
I quickly removed my hand, and was about to walk back to Nino, but she grabbed my wrist. I felt a hot blush spreading over my cheeks.
"Thank you. You're the best, Adrien"And with that, she waved to me and Nino as we left the department.
Hopefully this would be the first and last time she would ever have to do that. When we arrived to the scene, there was already a bright yellow police tape blocking any residents from seeing the aftermath of the attack.
There was a body on the floor, a puddle of blood seeping around it. And a group of forensics huddled around it, murmuring what they needed to jot down in their evidence books.
"Male. Around 32. Height: 5'9. Cause of death: Stab wound. Time of death: 11:54am."
"Its said Hawkmoth himself killed the man himself this time" One of the officers whispered to me.Hawkmoth himself? Oh no. That means the mastermind behind the Akumatised gang is lurking in plain sight. This is bad. Very bad.
