First Day on the Job

Trying to shower with a cast is a lot harder than I thought it would be, and a real waste of garbage bags. Not to mention, it was Monday morning, the first day of my new job, adding first day jitters to the mix. Mr. Warfstache said today was going to be easy, just the introductions and showed around the office, or Manor, as he kept saying. He was kind enough to bring me to my car after I was cleared for release by Dr. Iplier. That time, no one was hit by the man with highly questionable driving skills.

After drying off, I get dressed in some grey slacks and a light blue blouse, trying to look professional. I succeeded for the most part, except for the neon pink cast, courtesy of Warfstache. He had taken it upon himself to choose the color while I was unconscious. He seems to have a theme going on.

In my rush due to being nervous, I find myself sitting on my couch 15 minutes early. Having nothing else to do, I look at my phone to pass the time, occasionally checking my messanger bag to see if I had everything I might need. Pens, pencils, paper, laptop, etc. I'm hoping to get a better feel for what I should start bringing today. Maybe some bubble wrap for myself in case Mr. Warfstache decides to hit me with something else. I'm trying to get over that since he gave me a job, but it's a slow going process.

I look at my watch one last time, seeing that it was time to head out the door. In all honesty, I'm going to be very early, but I can't risk being late. I stand up and make my way over to the door, pausing for a moment. This will be interesting. With that thought, I take a deep breath, and turn the handle.

According to my phone, Ego Manor is just over 30 minutes away from my apartment, heading in the direction of the woods. I didn't quite grasp what kind of business this place was, mostly because whenever I asked Mr. Warfstache he would just say 'We all do our own thing'. He said that he was a reporter, and even had a talk show which I hadn't heard of before that day in the car. Maybe it's a television studio? Or a news station? I guess I'm gonna find out.

The long and empty winding road led me through the forest quite a ways. At first I was worried I wasn't given the right address before a building came into view. I feel my jaw drop in awe at the looming building before me. It's truly a mansion, with a lit circular driveway leading up to a 5 story building. It was built out of brick, made taller than it is wide. Shaking my head I quickly park behind one of the other cars in the driveway, making sure to not block them in.

Getting out of the car, I make my way up the ornate stone steps to the front door. The front doors looked more like the doors to a house, rather than a business, so I pressed the doorbell to my right in order to alert it's occupants I'm here. I wait for a moment, the feeling that I made a mistake growing with each second. I was shocked out of my thoughts from a voice coming out of a speaker I hadn't seen before on the wall to my right.

"State your name and business," droned a voice.

I took a moment to respond before coming to my senses, "Oh, uh, Sawyer Jones, I'm here about the secretary job."

Another few moments passed by before the speaker crackled again, "What secretary job?"

I paused, "Oh, Mr. Warfstache gave me a job? He told me to come here and start at 9."

There was a the sound of grumbling on the other end before, "You may enter. Wait for someone to retrieve you."

I nodded, even though they probably couldn't see me and turned the brass handle, pushing the door open. The inside was even more grand than the outside, although much more modern looking. The room had white walls decorated with paintings and some furniture that looked unused. It was a well thought out combination of modern and what I imagine, well, the insides of mansions to look like.

I only had a moment to get my bearings within the room before I heard the sound of shoes clicking on the floor coming from a hallway to my left. I looked up and smile when I see Mr. Warfstache walking down towards me with the usual pep in his step.

"Morning, kid! How's it going?" He said, his words slurred in their usual manner.

I smiled, "Good! Excited for my first day. And you?"

"Always good in this neighborhood! Have an interesting guest to interview tonight, the show will be heart stopping!"

I laughed a little at his enthusiasm, finding it refreshing after talking to so many bland business adults. Hopefully the others will be like him, it would make working here an interesting endeavor. I felt my heart lighten a little, this job was going to be great! We chatted a little along the way, sometimes Mr. Warfstach would point at something and explain what it was, until we came to an elevator.

"Nows the time for the fun stuff," Warfstache said, pressing the button to go up. He turned to me as the elevator made it's way down to us, "Now, the Googles are interesting characters, you'll be fine as long as you don't ask many questions and don't make any sudden movements."

I furrowed my eyebrows, "What?"

We got into the elevator as it dinged open, Wafstache hitting the button for the 2nd floor, "Trust me, you'll see."

With that ominous message, the elevator doors slid shut, sealing us in.
