Chapter 27
Draco:
Apart from an extremely confused Carina for most of the following days, the rest of the week was pretty uneventful. Mother, of course was ecstatic about this and wasted no time in busying our days with everything Christmas, going even far enough to plan a new year's eve party, no expenses spared.
But the only person whose face fell with just one look at the guest list was Carina's, on breakfast, a day before the last day of the year.
"The Greengrass family is coming, darling!" Rachel said happily as she beamed up at Carina, whose face scrunched up at the mention and yanked the parchment out of her mother's grasp, scanning it carefully, until with a soft, 'Oh' she handed it back, a forlorn look on her face as she went back to waffles.
"Why the long face dear?" Mother enquired, glancing up from her teacup and I turned too, looking at Carina shrug in response.
"Well Daphne won't be with her parents," Carina said, a faraway look in her eyes, "Nor will Astoria, she stayed back at school."
"Where is Daphne?" I asked, certain she was going home for the holidays.
"She's with Milo." Carina said, then added, "Her boyfriend from Durmstrang." For mothers benefit.
"Oh!" Mother said, smiling as she continued, "Why don't you give me an address dear, I'll forward an invitation right this instant-"
"No." Carina said, shaking her head as she pushed her finished plate away, "There's no need, they already have plans, it will be rude to interrupt." With that she muttered a quiet excuse me, and left the room, her head low and steps hurried.
"Draco." Rachel said after we had heard the door slam shut behind the newly brunette girl, "Can you talk to her please?"
Bewildered at the request I looked up at Rachel, who just shook her head, almost minimising the difference between the two. Now that Carina had dark hair, it was hard not to play 'Spot the difference' between both the Hadley women.
"I'm afraid having her spend the holidays away from her best friends has made my daughter a little cranky." Rachel remarked, "She's used to spending all her vacations with them."
"Okay?"
"She needs to understand that she cannot from now on and she refuses to listen to a word I say about that-"
"Why?" I enquired, cutting Rachel off.
She pulled up her eyebrows, glancing down at her food before making eye contact, "While I'm proud she has such great friends, I'm afraid they won't exactly," then pursed her lips before continuing, "Agree with her father's actions-"
"Oh." I cut her off again, realisation dawning in me and I nodded at her politely miffed expression.
"Will you then?" she asked, her eyes hopeful and I nodded, conveniently kicking myself in the head for just going along with anything those eyes tell me to do.
That said, I still made my way to Carina's room, my mind whirring as to how I was going to get her to understand and the moment I reached her door, so did the answer.
"Hadley-"
"No." came a stern voice as soon as I walked into the room and I was met with Carina's back, hunched over as she sat on the floor, multiple photos strewn around the carpet, and her face determinedly away from me.
I sighed, inching closer to take a seat next to her but she shifted, actually sitting on some of the photos, in her bid to get away from me.
"She sent you." Her soft voice said, devoid of the anger the one syllable word had conjured up a few moments ago and I pursed my lips, ready to deny when she whipped her head back to me fixing me with her fierce gaze, not so unlike her own mother.
