Chapter Five

On the drive home, I beat myself up about my lack of intelligence while speaking to Ashton. He was just a teenage boy. A very sweaty and attractive boy, but that shouldn't have mattered. I had dealt with good looking guys plenty of times before, but there was something different about Ashton. He was far more quiet than other guys, and he didn't try to come onto me. It was almost like I was coming onto him.

I shook my head, trying to rid my head of thoughts of Ashton, and tried to focus on the road. It was sprinkling lightly, my windshield soon becoming spotted with rain. It wasn't a full on downpour, so I rolled down the windows of my car, much to Elaine and Kara's dismay. They both whined the rest of the way back to our house, complaining about how they had spent this much time straightening their hair, and then it was just going to frizz. I tuned out their complaints, and stuck my hand out the window, catching raindrops.

They had somehow worked something out with my mom, so Kara was spending the night. As soon as we pulled into the driveway, the jumped out and ran into the house. I was glad to see my mother's jeep next to my car in the driveway, which meant that I wouldn't have to 'enterain' Emily. I actually wouldn't have been too upset if I had to, although it did mean no one would bother me as I fixed up some pictures.

I started up my new laptop and found my camera cord, before plugging in the large-lensed camera. You probably wouldn't have been able to tell that it was new, due to the amount of stickers that covered the top, leaving just enough space to show the company logo in the middle. Opening up the pictures I had taken in the past few weeks, I chose a few and began to clean then up.

I had photo shoots quite often, earning myself some extra money, as the diner pay as much as I would have liked,  and I had recently been taking senior portraits for some kids in my class. I liked to think I was being a nice person when I edited the giant pimple in the middle of their forehead, so that's what I planned on doing that night. My perfect night was ruined pretty early though, because just as I got to his pictures, Jason messaged me.

moose44: have you started the gg yet rogers?

I laughed, remembering when he made up the chat user name. He thought his little fourteen year old self was really funny and changing 'Moore' to 'Moose' due to their similar spellings. He was so proud of himself and how clever he was that he wrote his chat name on Ms. Johnson's white board, earning him a detention. Well, as much of a detention that you can get in the eighth grade.

erin.rogers.2:  not yet, why?

moose44: it's the worst thing i have ever read. it is so confusing and i don't understand why nick writes it so weird.

erin.rogers.2: that doesn't surprise me. it was written in 1925 and set in 1922. of course they will have different writing styles than authors now do.

moose44: how the hell do you know that

erin.rogers.2: it's called google, you dumbass

moose44 is typing...

moose44 has exited chat

I let out a sighed of relief, thankful I didn't have to talk to him anymore. I finished all the edits I needed to make, and prepped the photos to be sent out to print the next morning. I plopped myself down on my bed. I grabbed my copy of The Great Gatsby, hoping that it wouldn't put me to sleep.

I had hoped wrong. I woke up the next morning, my blue clock reading 9:49. I was still dressed in the clothes I had worn the day before. Pulling myself out of bed, I stripped and put on some fresh clothes. I stumbled downstairs, only to find my mom packing her purse, clad in her lilac scrubs.

"I was just about to wake you up. The hospital called with an emergency, so I have to go. I need to the go pick up stuff from the store from me, and would would you be so kind as to make breakfast for the girls?" She spoke fast, so it was hard for my partially asleep brain to process.

"Uh, emergency, store, breakfast," I repeated the best I could. She gave me a quick kiss on the cheek before hurrying out the door. I completely slumped over, not ready to go out. Instead of blowing off my mother's orders, like most people would, i grabbed my car keys and wallet from the tray by the front door, slipped on some flip flops and left.

I kept myself from falling asleep by blasting the radio, which got me some glares on the road, but I coukld've cared less. I pulled up to the grocery store after fifteen minutes of trying not to doze off and stay focused on the road. I looked at the shopping list as I grabbed a shopping cart. I managed to walk up and down the aisles, trying not run into anyone. But when I did, I wasn't surprised to see who it was.
