*Nikki's POV*
We all rushed to the principal's office to see Sarah sitting outside, waiting to talk to Principal O'Connell. She didn't look scared, just pissed.
"What the hell happened?" El asked as soon as she saw her sister.
"Why the hell does it matter?" Sarah retorted coolly. "The teacher was being a prick to Dustin, I called him out on his bullshit. End of story."
Dustin coughed. "She called him an old codfish. It was actually kind of badass."
"Hey," I said with a small smile, crouching next to the eldest Hopper girl. "You really did that?" She nodded. "Just to protect this dipshit?" She nodded again. "Well, I'll be damned; Miss Sarah Hopper is a badass."
The door to the principal's office opened, revealing an old man who was much wider than he was tall. His huge-ass mustache acted as almost a complete veil for his sweaty red face, which clashed horribly with his bright orange suit. Still, the thing that really stuck out to me was the Hawkins Lab badge pinned to his collar. Sarah saw it, too, and her skin drained of all color. I put a hand on her shoulder, acknowledging that someone else noticed what she had.
"Well, well," he rasped, staring at all of us, "I see you've all had an eventful first day so far. Who're the culprits?"
Sarah stood up, but I moved in front of her. "Excuse me, sir, but my friend here has never been to a public school, and doesn't understand-"
"Another Harrington," O'Connell interjected. "You gonna be as much trouble as your brother?"
"Depends on how many more times you interrupt me, sir," I replied, causing his beady little eyes to narrow for a split second.
The old man looked behind me to Sarah. "Let's talk." His head twitched toward his office. El grabbed her sister's arm, but Sarah confidently walked through the door, winking at us before it closed behind her.
"Shit, guys," Lucas muttered. "He's gonna kill her."
"For disrespecting a teacher?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
Will shuddered. "I've heard horror stories from my brother. O'Connell once suspended him for getting shoved in a locker by Tommy H. in his freshman year."
"I'm sure there was more to it," Max replied, rolling her eyes.
"Have you met his brother?" I asked. "Kid couldn't hurt a fly if he tried to. And yeah, Steve told me this dude was a power-hungry clown."
"Like Bozo?" Mike asked, shaking his head nervously. He was terrified of clowns.
Rolling my eyes, I sat on the bench, playing with my hands.
Wait a second.
"Guys, we have to get in there." I sprang up, going to the door.
"What? Why?" Dustin pulled me back, looking me in the eyes.
Trying to escape his grasp, I looked back at him. "He was wearing a Hawkins Lab badge."
"Maybe he got it from a friend?" Max questioned. "Seriously, Nik, think before you go barging in there."
"But I really think that-"
Bang!
"Screw thinking." Before anyone could stop me I was at the door, grabbing the handle and jerking it violently. "It's locked!"
El nudged me aside, slowly raising her hand as she concentrated on the door. Within seconds, it swung open so hard, it almost fell off the hinges. We saw that the bang had come from the desk that had been thrown against the wall, and Sarah was being pinned to the floor by Principal O'Connell, who had a taser jammed in her side.
Nose already bloody, El used her telekinesis to throw the weapon away from the old man, giving me the chance to grab it as it flew from his hand. Distracted, the principal let go of Sarah long enough for Dustin to grab her and pull her away from him.
Rather than tasing him like I should have, I kneed the old dude in the groin, causing him to fall on his back in pain.
"What do you want from her?" I asked, holding him down by the shoulders. For such a big guy, he was surprisingly easy to restrain.
O'Connell struggled to get away from me. "She's a monster. Dangerous out in the real world."
I scoffed, slapping him as hard as I could. "You have the audacity to call her a monster? You're the one terrorizing a child! A child you did experiments on, like some little lab rat! How dare you call her a monster?"
This jackass got me all emotional, giving him the advantage he was waiting for, throwing me off him. I felt myself go flying, everything blurring past as I hit something hard with a loud clang.*Dustin's POV*
After hitting the desk and almost immediately passing out, our strongest fighter was done for this battle. Realizing two of our party members were now unconscious (well, actually, Sarah was more dazed than anything else), I realized we may have met our match. Sadly, it was a fat old man. He knew that we were just kids, that we were beating up our principal on the first day of school. To anyone else, we were a group of young delinquents, not a make-shift family trying to protect their newest member. We didn't know much about the situation, but we knew this guy had been one of the ones to experiment on Sarah; you could tell by the terror in her eyes when she first saw him.
"You're all in so much trouble," he remarked, "assaulting an authority figure."
"Calm down, asshole. You're a principal, not the president," I retorted. Damn, I guess when Mon and Sarah aren't available, I'm the party's resident sass-master.
Principal O'Connell looked at me. "This isn't your fight, Curly Top. This is between me and One."
"Her name's Sarah, you dipshit," El shot back.
"And you're Eleven." O'Connell's eyes lit up in recognition. "You probably don't remember me, I left the lab when you were a kid. But I remember you. I'd recognize those tortured eyes anywhere."
"Stay the hell away from her." Mike stepped in front of El. Lucas and Will were out of the office by now, making sure Sarah was okay. It was just me, El, Mike, and Max now against this fatass.
The principal smirked at me. "You all think you're so brave, don't you? Think you can take me because there's strength in numbers or some cliché shit like that?" He chuckled. "Teenagers are dumber than I thought, I-"
Before he could continue, O'Connell was suddenly clasping his throat, gasping for air. We all turned to see El, blood dripping down her chin, closing her fingers so that she was almost making a fist.
"El, no!" I shouted. "Don't! If he dies, we're all going down. There's no way of getting information from him!"
El's gaze didn't leave the old principal, her concentration barely breaking. "He hurt Sarah! What do you propose we do?"
Trying to keep all of our hands clean (but mostly El's), I thought for a moment. What would Mon do?
My eyes darted to the unconscious girl against the desk, then to the taser still in her hand. How the hell do you work this thing? I grabbed it from her limp grasp, running at the principal, who was almost too weak to even cough. "Eleven, stop!" She did, and I rammed the taser into the old man's side, causing him to jolt violently before going totally limp.
We all stood there a minute, unsure of what to do. Max nudged him with her foot. "Is he...?"
"I don't think so," I said, "but I don't want to stay and find out. Let's go."
