"Wait for me, big brother!"

No, it can't be...

O O O

"Big brother, are you going somewhere?"

"Yeah, I'm going to school to get my annual checkup."

"Remember to hurry, big brother, when you are done!"

"Don't worry, I'll be there. I won't miss it."

A smile, a wave, and she was gone. She was eager to leave.

I was also eager to leave when I received the health report at school.

"It's a real shame that you caught the disease. You're one of the brightest students we had. Because it's you we're talking about, you can stay here and finish school—"

I was out the door before the principal could finish talking.

"Nonono..."

I mumbled while running. I had to get away from everyone. I definitely couldn't show my family my report. Especially her. I'll never do anything that would make her sad.

Because she is the light of my life.

When I was caught up in the tornado of schoolwork and school affairs, she was always there greeting me with a smile and a cheerful "You're back!" when I arrived home after a long day. Her sweet personality never failed to brighten up my spirits.

There was no way I could tell her about my health status.

And for the first time, I lied to her.

"Sorry, but I have to go somewhere. Don't worry about me."

"When will you be here? Mom and dad are waiting for you so we can eat."

I kicked stones off the streets while I racked my brain for an answer.

"You guys can eat first, I'll be there in a bit."

"You have to come, okay? Something good happened to me today, and I have to tell you about it!"

I closed my eyes, holding back tears. I won't be able to hear what she wanted to tell me.

"Yeah, I'll be there... wait for me."

I ended the call with chills down my spine.

How did I end up this way?

My thoughts flew as I ran.

Maybe I should go back and tell them the truth, but what if-?

The streets were devoid of life, the city glowing yet silent, as if it was waiting for me to be swallowed into the darkness that has overtaken the streets.

No, they will reject me, and my classmates will treat me as an outcast.

I headed towards the mountain, the asphalt road turned into dirt as the city streets disappeared.

"I have to do this. It's for the best." were my foolish thoughts.

It was raining. The trees tried hard to block the rain, but still the waterworks continued to fall on me.

I tripped on a stone and sprawled in the mud. My body refused to move any further.

"Not now..."
