Corey's POV
I don't think today could get any better. Seriously this may sound cliche but I honestly believe this has been the best day ever. I keep playing this morning over and over again in my mind as I walk through the cafeteria doors. I grab a tray and make my way through the lunch line. I try to choose something that doesn't resemble puke in someway. We used to have this awesome lunch lady who was in charge of the whole menu. But then some scandal went down where some kid was sleeping with her for extra chicken tenders at lunch. Crazy I know. Well anyway, since she left the good food left with her. We're lucky today that we don't have something that looks like it was pre-chewed for us.
"Man, I miss those chicken patties we used to get remember those? Or those footlong subs with whatever toppings we want?" My best friend Matt says. Matt and I never used to like each other, but once we both were added to the soccer team we realized if we could conjoin our powers, we would be unbreakable. When Niall left, I started hanging out with Matt and his friends and realized they aren't that bad of guys. Yeah, they like to party a lot but what teenage boy doesn't?
"When I find out what scumbag slept with that lunch lady, his face is so going to be imprinted on my locker." Matt continues.
"I sure do miss those subs..." I agree. We continue talking about food and the big game on friday as we gather things on our trays. You would think that we haven't eaten a meal since 2007 from the amount of food that is on both of our trays, Coach has us doing this crazy work out in preparation for the game against Woodsville High on Friday. They are our biggest rivals and both schools go full out for it. It's our Homecoming game this year so everyone is extra pumped for it.
"Are you going to the dance after the game? I ask, even though I know what the answer is.
"No way in hell man. That shit is for those lovey-dovey couples. Not for the Mattman." He says while grabbing a cup of peaches. Matt isn't one to go to dances. He's more of a guy with the motto "Fuck 'em and dump 'em". It's not like he is a complete asshole. He's just 75% of one. He likes to get into girls pants without having the commitment of a relationship. But he can be a really good friend when you need one. If you ask me, I think he just hasn't met the right girl to whip him into shape. "Are you going?" He askes.
"I don't know man, maybe..." I say quietly.
"Why would you spend the money to even go to a stupid school function like that?" He says looking at me.
"I have to see if Amelia wants to go or if she wants to go to the party that night." I say.
"Since when did she decide if you were going to dances or not? You screwing her or something?" He says while chuckling.
"Nah man...but she may be my girlfriend now."
"No shit man! Since when? I'm just hearing about this?" He says as he almsot drops his tray in surprise.
"This morning. I finally told her how I felt. Hey she's over at the table now. I'll talk to you later at practice and tell you then. Bye man." I say
"Well lookey there, my little Corey is growing up and getting himself a girlfriend. See you later loverboy." Matt says, then turns towards the soccer table.
Now that Matt knows about Amelia and I, the whole school should know by the end of the day. He may be a good friend, but he can't keep a seceret like that to save his life. Sure enough as I'm sitting down at my seat next to Amelia, I glance over and see Matt pointing at me and talking to the rest of the team.
"So, can I just lay some ground rules?" Caitlin says. "I know you two are all into each other now, but while I'm in the room can you please keep the groping and kissing to a minimum. If you can prevent it all together, that would be even better." She continues.
"You don't have to worry about that Cait." Amelia says while giving me a serious look. Note to self, keep hands to self when Caitlin is around.
"Now back to what I was saying" Caitlin says. But slowy I start zoning her out. I just think of the pretty girl sitting next to me and how I even managed to have her by my side. I thank my 14 year old self for not ignoring Amelia after Niall left. Because if I did things would be totally different. I grab Amelia's hand under the table and start to eat my lunch. I don't think I have ever been this happy. I look up to try and listen to Caitlin go on about her latest band that she is in to when I catch Niall in the corner of my eye. He is sitting at a table a few rows down with all of the slutty girls. I slowly get a pain in my chest, not because he is surrounded by the most prettiest girls in school. But because he is pretending to listen to them talk, while he stares at Amelia.
I pretend like I don't notice but it becomes pretty hard. Every time I look up, he is still looking over at her. Like can he not? I want to go over there and smash his head in, but I just think about how its not worth it. He's not worth it.
I spend the rest of lunch talking with both girls, as I sit there and casually rub my thumb along Amelia's hand. Perfectly content with life.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Being on the field is the only time I can truely clear my head. All thoughts of Niall, Amelia and this Friday's game clear my head. It's just me and the ball. Coach has us run two miles before we can even start kicking balls around. When we finally finish the running coach walks onto the field and makes an announcment that literally ruined my day.
"Gather around guys. I just wanted to tell you that starting today we are welcoming a new player to the team." And thats when I noticed Niall standing behind him. "Guys, this is Niall. He's going to practice with you guys today and I'm going to figure out where he could play that would better the team. Now partner up and go through your drills."
I don't think I grabbed Matt fast enough. There was no way I was going to be stuck with Niall. I would probably kick his face instead of the ball. I look up in the bleachers where Amelia always sits and see her sitting there with her mouth dropped open. Well....atleast I'm not the only one who is shocked.
As practice is winding down I can't thank God enough. I just want to get out of here. It's like we were younger all over again. Coach was so impressed with Niall and his skills it was like we were all living under his shadow again. Even though he has only been on the team for 2 hours. But that doesn't make me as mad as when anytime Niall did some "cool" play, he would look up to Amelia with this big smile. Just like he used to during games. Anytime he scored a goal during a game, he would always look over to Amelia and give her his biggest smile.
The second coach announced that we could go, I gathered my things and went right over to Amelia.
"Why are you over here already? You usually go to the locker room first, I was just about to walk over to the car." She says questioning while looking into my eyes.
"I know but I wanted to make sure you didn't die of boredom." I say which earns me a laugh and smile.
"Nah, I'm good. I've been doing this for 3 years now " She says and then sticks her tongue at me. God I want to kiss her. I lean down and kiss her cheek.
"I'll see you at the car Ameba." I whisper in her ear. When she starts to walk away, I turn around and see Niall starring at us. Good. Be jealous asshole.
The car ride home goes by in a blur. We got to her house faster than I wanted to. How are we suppose to say goodbye? Am I allowed to kiss her? Because I really really want to. She turns towards me.
"I'll talk to you later?" She says.
"Yeah..." I say. She grabs for the door handle but I gently pull back on her shoulder. "Amelia." I say.
She turns around and looks at me. That's when I lean in, and cup her face. I gently run my thumb up and down her cheek. "Amelia" I say again. And just like yesterday, I press my lips against hers. As we kiss, I run my fingers through her long hair. I could stay in this position for hours, with her lips on mine. I slowly run my tongue along her bottom lip asking for entrance, which she denies. The kiss lasts a little longer before she slowly pulls away.
"I better get going, my mom is probably starring out the window by now." She says then chuckles.
"Yeah true. I'll text you later Amelia." I say as she gets out of the car and heads towards her house. I back out of the driveway and think about how lucky I got, to be able to kiss Amelia Adams.
