Melanie POV
Running.....I've got to keep running. To stop running would be fatal. Though turning back would be so much worse. I keep running, slipping and sliding through the oozing mud, trying to escape the mental nightmare I have entered into. The physical pain from the running is so much less compared to the emotional pain. It hurts like a jagged piece of ice through the heart.
As I run towards the woods, I hear my Father catching up to me. I immediately jump, shifting into my wolf in mid-air and instantly start running on all fours. I hear Father shifting behind me and know that running is a lost cause, but I know I have to keep going; for my friends, for my brothers and most importantly, for Darren.
In despair I let out a massive howl filled with hopelessness and anguish to the skies whilst running. My running starts to slow as I start to gradually become exhausted.
I reach the woods and start running in all different directions avoiding all obstacles such as trees. I can tell my Father is catching up as I can hear his footsteps becoming increasingly louder. I turn my head to see he is barely a few meters behind me.
Distracted, I turn to face the front once more and trip over a twig on the floor, and tumble to the floor in a heap. My Father slows and shifts back to human form looking at me menacingly.
“See, you’re just as weak as your poor old Mother. Goodbye my dear Melanie.”
The hopelessness sets in, and I bow my head down in misery knowing that this is the end. I close my eyes wishfully thinking that if I can’t see him, nothing can happen to me.
Unexpectedly, I hear a great howl come from the side of me, and feel a gust of wind fly across my face as if someone has just ran in front of me. I hear a loud bang, and open my eyes whilst looking up to see my Father pressed up against a tree by a large brown wolf with green eyes.
Darren.
Darren POV
I feel overjoyed at how well that date with Mel went. Throughout the evening, her eyes sparkled with fun, and were filled with joy. I felt a sense of pride and love towards her the whole evening with how beautiful she is both outside and in.
Towards the end of our date, just as I think she’s convinced to give us a chance to be together she gets the phone call from her Dad. Her eyes immediately look downcast, and as she comes off the phone she just looks up at me. Eventually, I break the silence asking her
“What’s wrong?”
She then gives me a smile which doesn’t reach her eyes and so I immediately can tell something’s wrong. However, she replies
“Nothing, just Father wants me home. Tonight has been lovely; good while it lasted, eh?.”
I pay the bill, thinking of ways on how to convince her we'd be good together. I decide just to go for it
“Now you’ve seen how good we are together, please give me a chance. You and me, even with your doubts, we can get through this. Together.”
I hold my breath in anticipation for her reply. Finally, she decides
“Okay, fine; one condition though – you can’t let anyone know. Please, for me, keep it a secret." Ugh, fine I suppose; it's the best I'm gonna get. Hiding my disappointment, I say
“Deal. See you tomorrow beautiful.”
We reach her house, and Mel looks up at the house apprehensively. As she goes to get out of the car, I lean over calling her name. She ducks down to speak to me and I bring my lips to hers.
“One for luck my lovely.”
She then leaves the car and watches me drive away from the house, but just around the corner, I stop the car to think things through.
What happened? I mean, how did her mood change so quickly? She seemed so happy and then from one phone call, she looked almost….scared. But it was her Dad on the phone, right? It’s weird how she never calls him Dad, always Father. I mean, he brothers all seem to whenever they mention him, but why is she so formal about him. Unless…. No, no way can he be hurting her, not his own daughter.
Gazing out of my car window deep in thought, I suddenly hear a howl whipping through the air. Straightaway, I know it’s Melanie.
I throw open the door slamming it shut behind me. I shift in mid-air not even caring if anyone saw me. I sniff the air and quickly find Mel’s scent. I follow it running as fast as I can. I come up to the woods, and start to delve deeper through the trees.
I hear a snap, and then a muffled bang as if someone has fallen to the ground. To the right of me, what I then hear sends a shiver down my spine.
“See, you’re just as weak as your poor old Mother. Goodbye my dear Melanie.”
How can a Father say something as cruel as that to his daughter?!
I run towards the sound and as Melanie’s scent suddenly grows stronger, I look up and I see a dark figure standing over my Mel. I fill the anger rushing through my body, and I feel the fury me and my wolf share. We run towards the two and spring up jumping against her Father slamming us both into a tree. I look up at him, and he looks down at me with a sense of triumph.
Why does that not seem quite right to me? He should be scared but he’s not. I hear footsteps becoming gradually louder heading into our direction, preparing as if to circle us. I sniff the air and my first thought is
“Crap.”
