Pray

There's not to many times in my life where I have been scared. Truly scared. But as my head rests on the steering wheel and the air bag deflates after pounding into my stomach and chest I want to cry.

It takes me a while to understand where I am and what's going on. I quickly gather my thoughts and remember Sarah. The gun. Cherry.
I turn my head to look at Cherry who isn't moving and I pray to God that she has just passed out and isn't dead. I don't know what I would do. Her face looks beat up and there is a couple of scratchers. But I'm sure that I see her chest moving up and down indicating breathing. Thank God.

Sarah. My dashboard is shattered and the blood stains that are on the remaining pieces of it clearly shows that Sarah went thorough the windshield. I don't dare look out of the window to see the damage. To see what I have done. I can't.

Everything once again goes all black, along with my thoughts and my sight.

The sound of beeping sounds in my eardrums. And I can't feel anything. I am numb. I feel out of whack and drugged up. I open my eyes and they instantly burn from the bright lights. God, I hope I'm not dead.

"Oh Hello there Mr. Davidson. Good to see that you're awake."

My eyes turn towards the voice and I see a older nurse with a clip board smiling at me. Her hair was short and grey and she wore thick glasses with a red rim.

"Where's Cherry!?" I question frantically after all of what happened hits me at once.

"I'm sorry sir.  Who?" The nurse askes with a confused look on her face. Cherry. What does she mean. Who.

"The women that I was in the accident with ma'am. African American, curly hair, slim body." I explained.

"Oh you mean Angel dear. Angel Heart?" She questioned.
"How hard did you hit your head?" She laughed.

"Yeah Angel...Thats what I meant. I chuckle. Though my ribs hurt when  I do.

"Is she okay" I ask. I don't know what I would do if she wasn't okay. Just seeing her bloody and bruised in the car was enough to make my legs go weak.

"She is fine. She just has a couple of bruises here and there and a slight concosion, but she'll  be okay." The nurse explains.
It feels as if a huge 10 lbs weight has been lifted off of me. I sigh in relief.

"Thank you so much." I say to the nurse who smiles at me.

"Your other friend isn't doing so great though" she frowns.

My other friend?

Sarah. I had to do it. She was going to kill me or Cherry. She had a gun. She was gonna hurt Cherry.
My thoughts are frantic and I don't know what to say.

"There's a few officers outside who would like to have a word with you. I believe that they already spoke to your friend Angel. But they need to follow up with you. The driver. On what happened." The nurse speaks.

"Okay." I say.

The nurse leaves and a few officers enter the room and I sit up slowly on the uncomfortable bed.

"Hello Mr. Davidson. My name is Officer Pit and that's office Terrence and Shields. We just want to get an understanding of what went on tonight." Officer Pit says.
He is tall and slim. His hair is dark Brown and his eyes are brown also. There are big bags under his eyes as if he hasn't slept in days and he had bushy eyebrows.

I nod my head in understanding.

"Can you explain what happened tonight? Everything" He spoke.
I swallowed hard. I don't know why I am so nervous. I hadn't done anything wrong. It was defense. Delf defense. But the way the officers looked at me had me on edge.

"I left my house to pick up Angel. From her house...for a party." I start.

"Do you usually take women who aren't your wife out to parties?" Officer Pit asked.

"My wife and I are in the middle of a divorce so who I take out is my business." I say.

"Oh I see." He says almost mockingly.

I look him in the eyes. It's as if he was trying to make me seem like the bad guy. I take a deep breath of air and continue.

"I went to her house. We talked for a couple of minutes at her door then we got into my car."

"Around what time was this Mr. Davidson?" Officer Terrence asked. He was a large black man with a shaved shiny head and a muscular build. His voice was very deep.

"That was around. 8:40." I answer.

"We were silent when we were in the car. It felt like something was wrong or off so I turned on the radio to fill the silence. Che...-Angel asked me what was wrong and I explained to her my worries about the night and how I hopped that she didn't feel like I pressured her into going. We talked it out and that's when Sarah spoke from the back seat." I spoke.

"And Mrs.Davidson being there was a surprise to you?" Officer Pit asked. I looked at him in awe of his stupidity for a couple of seconds.

"Yes. That was a surprise. What also was a surprise was the gun that she had pointed at our heads." I spoke.

"What happened after you saw the gun?" Officer Terrence asked.

"I was struck by fear. I started to slow down and tried to talk some sense into her,  But she told me to speed up and pointed the gun at my head. She started going into a rant about how Angel was the girl who stole me from her and all kinds of terrible things."I said recalling the terrible things that she said about Cherry.

"What were the terrible things that she said? " Office Terrence asked.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

"She called her the...N-word." I said.

"Multiple times. And she held the gun at Angels head. I was scared for my life...I was scared for Angels life. So I hit the brake. I-I didn't know what else to do. I was. Afraid. I was protecting Angel and I." I explain myself.

Yes I hurt Sarah on purpose but it was self defense. She could've killed me. She could've killed Angel. I had to do it. I had to.

I run my hands through my hair that was no longer slicked back but messy.
My eyes burn with anger and fright and I just want to sleep and see Cherry.

"Thank you Mr. Davidson that's all we need to know." Officer Terrence says. He gives me a reassuring nod and Officer Pit and whomever the other officer was follows him out of the room.

I slide down into the small bed feeling helpless and exhausted. My eyes become heavy and I fall asleep fast.
