A Hard Knock Life

"Annie? Annie!? Annie!"

I woke up to Molly shouting for Annie. Molly had a nightmare, I'm guessing. Annie walked to her.

"Molly, it's only a dream. There there."

Annie kissed Molly on top her little head.

"How are we supposed to get any sleep around here?" Pepper asked.

"It was only a dream Molly," Annie continued.

"Another nightmare?" I asked Molly in a motherly tone.

She nodded.

"You know what she is? She's a baby."

Pepper stood on her bed and was walking across on the other beds.

"Ow!" Cried the girls.

"She cries all the time! She wets the bed."

Molly sat up.

"I do not!"

"Yes you do you little brat!"

The girls were having a pillow fight. Annie and me walked to them.

"Cut it out!"

"Girls, cut it out!"

"You want Miss. Hannigan to come in here, go back to bed!"

Annie turned to Pepper.

"Or you'll have me to deal with."

"Aw blow it out your old wazoo!"

I grabbed Pepper by the arm.

"You don't bad mouth her! You bad mouth her again, I'll whip your behind until it's red as a rose!"

"How come you do it Vicki?"

The girls call me Vicki, don't mind that at all.

"I'm not letting you or else you'll turn out like me."

The girls looked at me sadly.

"I don't want y'all to make the same mistakes I do. Ok? Now let's go back to sleep."

We were back in our beds. Annie started singing to Molly. It only lasted for a minute. Miss. Hannigan walked in. She walked slowly to us.

"Do I hear...singing in here?"

She stopped at Molly's bed.

"Since you're up. Everybody get up! Out of bed!"

We got out of bed.

"Clean up this mess! Get dressed! You will clean until everything's spotless!"

Annie got up.

"But it's in the middle of the night."

"But it's in the middle of the night!" Miss. Hannigan mocked her.

She grabbed Annie by her collar on her gown.

"And this floor will shine like to top of the Chrysler building or your backsides will, you understand?"

"Yes Miss. Hannigan," we all said.

"And as for you Victoria, bad mouth me last night, you get extra chores outside, you bad mouth me today, you'll be polishing shoes all day!"

Annie jumped down and stepped on her foot.

We ran and got our chores done. We were singing about what a hard knock life it is being an orphan. Molly was impersonating Miss. Hannigan which I thought was cute.

When we got done singing, Annie jumped in the laundry cart. We were covering her up.

"Cover me up good," Annie said.

"All you ever do is run away," Pepper said.

"Oh my goodness oh my goodness!" July said.

"I'm gonna tell," Pepper said to Annie.

"And I'm gonna rearrange your teeth," Annie replied.

We heard a loud whistle which meant Miss. Hannigan was there.

"What are you all just standing around here for? You're supposed to clean the bathroom and the kitchen before lunch my little pig droppings! If you skip the corners, there will be no lunch. And we're not having hot mush today."

"Yay!" We cheered.

"We're having cold mush."

"Aw!"

"Ew!"

We were disgusted.

"What!?"

"We love you Miss. Hannigan!" We all said.

"Wonderful. Where's Annie?"

"She had to go bathroom," Molly replied.

Molly is so cute!

"She had to go bathroom," Miss. Hannigan mocked her.

"Miss. Hannigan!" Mr. Bundles shouted from outside.

Miss. Hannigan gasped.

"Mr. Bundles!"

She walked away.

"Mr. Bundles."

We were mocking her. Mr. Bundles is the laundry man.

"See ya round Annie," I said.

Annie uncovered herself and looked up at me.

"You too Vicki."

I kissed her on her forehead and we smiled.
