The dishes were finished and I went to bed with the girls later that night. I woke up to Molly sitting up and getting ready to get out of bed.
"Molly, what are you doing sweetie?"
"I'm thirsty, my mouth is dry, I had a bad dream again."
"I'll get you some water."
She got back in her bed and I tucked her in. I went to the kitchen to get a half glass full of water. On the way back, I saw Miss. Hannigan's bedroom door open. I looked in to be nosey. I saw a blonde woman and Miss. Hannigan talking. I saw a man at her dresser, looked like he was stealing jewelry.
"Hey!" I got their attention.
He turned around and looked at me quickly, I mean't to scare him.
"Victoria, you scared the living daylights out of me! What are you doing up!?" Miss. Hannigan asked.
"Molly had a nightmare and she's thirsty."
"Molly's always having nightmares! Go on to bed."
"Sure."
I was walking away when I heard the blonde say something I didn't wanna hear at all.
"Little brats!"
I walked back in.
"What was that!?"
"Victoria-"
I interrupted Miss. Hannigan.
"No no! I wanna hear what she called them!"
"Victoria! Don't even think about it."
"Listen to her kid! Don't ya dare!" The man said.
"I wanna say a few words to her!"
"I bet you only know a few words you dumb blonde!"
"Why you!"
She lunged her fist but I dodged and punched her in the nose. I could take her! When it comes height compared to the three of us girls, I was in between them by a couple inches, I was taller a bit than the blonde.
She was whining and crying.
"Victoria you go to bed before I lock you in the closet for the rest of the night!"
"Sis wait, let me talk to this kid a minute."
The man walked towards me and shoved me out the room.
"Go to the kitchen."
He followed me.
"I oughtta teach ya some manners!"
We were in the kitchen.
"Fix me one of my sis' beverages!"
"Get it yourself."
"Ya know, I got no problem beating the tar outta ya!"
"Me neither."
"Well, I got myself a tough gal!"
"I'm not afraid of you...Rooster!"
"Ya know my name?"
"I heard of you."
"Ya get me a scotch before I get my sis to sell ya to the Indians."
I poured him a glass and me a glass out of rebelliousness.
"Ain't ya too young to be drinkin'?"
"You're not the boss of me. I think for myself unlike other kids. I'm different. A strong and independent kid who don't need parents. No authority over me."
I lied about parents. I wanted to impress Rooster so he'll like me enough to ask him about my mom.
"How old are ya kid?"
"Almost fourteen."
"And ya name's Victoria right?"
"That's my name."
I chugged the glass of scotch. He smirked.
"I like ya Victoria. We could get along real good. Maybe become partners in crime."
I laughed. That won't happen.
"Ya pretty tough for a teenager. I still have to tell ya off for hittin' my girl."
"Just lie and tell her you slapped me or somethin'."
"Sure. You betta get ta bed, ya probably got school tomorrow or somethin'."
"Rooster, I'm an orphan. I don't go to school. I had school in one of those orphanages run by nuns. I hated it when they caned us. I always wanted to give them a taste of their own medicine."
"I like ya even more kid!"
He laughed and pat me on the back. I rinsed my mouth out. I was headed back to bed with Molly's water.
"Nice meetin' you Rooster."
"Right back atcha kid."
He raised his glass. He left the kitchen. I slowly followed him.
"Why'd you do to her?" Miss. Hannigan asked.
"I showed her a thing a two about respectin' her elders."
He lied, I went to bed in satisfaction.
