Dad had a house of his own with a small but fair spare room for me to sleep. He started looking for a job and I was enrolled in a public school with no nuns what so ever! He was becoming a much better person but still had a permanent record of his crimes but that didn't stop him! He picked me up from school in his truck. He drove in a direction unknown to me.

"Where we going?"

"To tha court house. They have local records, maybe we can find ya mother."

We went inside the large room that kept records of every citizen.

"May I help you?"

"Do you have any records of Emily Lou Thornton, she's my mother?"

"Yeah. I'll go look."

The person at the front desk found the file of Mom.

"We couldn't find Emily Lou Thornton but we did find Emily Lou Thornton Stuart. Maybe that's the person you are looking for."

"Let me see," Dad said.

He opened the file.

"She's married and yes it's here, her maiden name's Thornton." Dad said.

"What? Does she have kids."

"It says here she had one kid when single and three when she married that Stuart guy."

"At least she loves them, wants them, and care for em, unlike me!"

My New York accent slipped out real thick at that moment.

"Three otha kids, what a tramp! And I'm guessing Stuart is a rich man!"

I walked out.

"Victoria!"

He followed me and stopped me as I was going out the building.

"Victoria, I understand ya upset but maybe he ain't rich, he might be like us."

"I don't know Dad. I wrote down her new address on my hand as you were looking at the other papers."

We left.
