The day was colder than usual. Yet, I couldn't feel the difference. Everywhere you looked was filled with a beautiful white layer of snow. My soft bed hugged me tight welcoming in the darkness. But, who am I trying to fool? It's been over 400 years since I needed a minute of sleep.
I sat up reaching for my slippers accidentally stumbling upon yesterday's night supper.
Shoot. Did I drink too much?
I bent over checking for her radial purse. It was weak but she'll live.
I slowly walked over to my huge window. Unknowingly my heart yearned for something I did not know. I leaned my head against it admiring the beauty of the snow.
The snow and I are alike, I thought. Beautiful on the outside and cold in the inside. My form was a blessing to me. One day, I will be the ruler of everything even to the beautiful falling snow.
Golden hair distracted me from my thoughts. A young lady with no coat walking just outside of my mansions gates. She hugged her shoulders hesitating walking any further.
Foolish human. She's probably experiencing a heartbreak by walking out in the snow like that.
Then she stopped and turned back. Not towards the direction she came from. But directly at me. Shining red eyes stared into mine. No doubt about it. Tears were cascading down like an ever growing river.
I stood paralyzed seeing the vampire cry of agony. I didn't know how I could hear her from so far but she mouthed a sentence which I heard clearly. My heart pinched just for a second. And with that, she disappeared.
"Nolan, my sir. There is a package directed to you right outside the gates", Darma my childhood nanny announced outside my door.
"Do not worry Crown Scion, for I will take care of this unimportant package for you", interruptive Ion my royal assistant.
I was still standing by my window shocked from the incident that had occurred a moment ago. I did not have time for these random packages.
"Very well, Throw it away", I finally spoke stepping away from the window.
"But sir, it is not a random package. It is a beating heart", Darma quickly spoke.
My eyes widened at the realization. I sped across my bedroom towards the door opening it with all my might.
"Take me to it", I demanded breathlessly for the first time in centuries.
We walked all the way towards the gates stepping on the perfect snow. There was a basket sitting at the entrance. A brown coat was laying over it protecting the beating heart from the harsh snow.
The scent was sweeter around it, penetrating my nostrils senses. I crouched down low hearing small breathes faintly. I lifted the oversized coat from the basket allowing me to get a look.
Red eyes. Vampire red eyes stared back at me. My heart ached at the sight, gripping my white shirt right above my heart. What is happening to me? Then I felt a single heartbeat for the first time in my chest.
"Nolan Dear! Are you okay?!", Darma worriedly asked.
Ignoring her question I stood up, my anger furiously growing with it.
"How is that possible? That child has a beating heart with vampire eyes. Could this child be one of them? But they have been extinct for over 600 years ago. Vampires can only be turned now", Ion questioned out loud.
"Feed it to the Newbies", I suddenly spoke out. My heart ached once again by my words.
"You will not do such a thing as this creature may be one of them and is under your charge, Nolan", Vampire King Indulf exclaimed as he walked towards us.
"I will not take care of it. I am the crown scoin and cannot be held accountable for this beating hearts life"
King Indulf grinned mischievously towards me. What is this old man up to? "The Council and the Nobles are starting to doubt your competence for the title. Their only excuse is your relationship towards anything in this world. They are frightened you have no property or possessions you can be held responsible for more than a week"
King Indulf lifted the basket from the ground peering into it.
"Raise it and prove them wrong. Especially taking care of a human baby can bring their attention for that matter"
How dare he say that. I can become King with or without excuses from anyone.
Ion cleared his throat catching our attention, "with all due respects sir, this would be a great solution, speeding up the crown's scoin assessments".
I glance back at the human-vampire child. Its eyes have changed to crystal gray color. Removing the evidence of a vampire. My heart beat once more at her sight. My fist tightened at the horrible sound. I growled at the memory of the red-eyed young lady that was no doubt the sender.
"Very well. I will take the child under my wing but do not speak about her being a possible vampire. If anyone finds out, I'll feed it to the newbies", I ordered to everyone around me. Even the Vampire King.
