katya had never run so fast in her life. cathedral street branched off into a multitude of tiny lanes and alleyways, and katya stopped at the entrance of each one, looking in and searching them for trixie. her heart raced as she found no trace of her in one, two, three alleyways – each was empty. the fourth had a bin in front of it that had been knocked over, and a tiny scrap of black cloth clung to the sharp edge. katya knew she was getting closer.

as she approached the entrance of the seventh alleyway she heard a soft murmur followed by a low laugh and a yelp. she sped up, coming to rest behind a bin as she looked over the scene. trixie was on the ground, looking up at three taller boys with fear in her eyes.

"you are sorry, are you trixie? what are you sorry for, dyke?" one of the boys sneered, and katya's face tensed into a frown.

"i-i don't know but i'm sorry," trixie whimpered, "i'm sorry for whatever you want me to be."

"sorrt for being a homo? a queer? a mistake?" another boy continued, punctuating each question with a kick to trixie's ribs. katya had had enough, revealing herself and standing at her full height.

"hey." she shouted, and all four looked over, the boys with shock and trixie with surprise and tears on her eyes.

"here to protect little trixie girl?"

katya laughed loudly, striding over and towering over the boys.

"don't you ever hurt trixie again." she said, and the foremost boy stood up taller and responded,

"why not?"

katya simply smiled again, then punched the boy full in the face.

"or that, you fucking homophobic scum. now get the fuck out of here before i hurt you again. and if i ever hear about you hurting trixie again, then i will fucking kill you. i promise."

the two boys still standing walked away quickly, breaking into a run when their fallen friend pulled himself to his feet. katya watched them go before bending down and cupping trixie's face with her hands.

"let's get you home, trixie. can you walk?"

trixie tried to stand up and stumbled, letting katya catch her. she looked helplessly at the older, who just smiled, picking the younger girl up and carrying her out of the alley.
