Gestures are all that I give. Sometimes they must be small, other times they must be big. Although occasionally I am over dramatic, it is what I must do to get you to fully understand what I would like.

Now I am sorry that I cannot just tell you what I am thinking or what I want. Believe me, if I could talk I would, but sadly long ago my tong was designed long, flat and loose. It really has no use other than pushing food around my mouth.

So I'm sorry if it is hard to understand me.

"Woof woof! Woof!" I barked at the old blue pickup. It's paint chipped off as it drove around our cul-de-sac. I needed to keep my family safe, so like any brave hero would, I made sure that old pickup would know who's boss.

"Lucky! Shut up! You're so annoying!"

Kat didn't understand how big of a threat this old car was. She came over to me and patted my head. " If ,only you could talk, then I'd know why you love to bark." She smiled.

I started panting because of the heat. I heard Kat's dad say that it's the hottest day of the year.

I walked over to my bed and lay down. I slowly started to drift off.

* * *

I woke to the sound of planes. Tons and tons of planes.

Kat was running around the house, frantically shoving random objects into a backpack she had grabbed.

"Lucky, c'mon! We gotta run. The planes are dropping bombs."

I tilted my head.

"Lucky I know you're confused but we have to go. Now!"

She started running down the stairs, two at a time. I got up and chased after her.

We ran out into the forest that was behind our house. I thought the running was done as we entered the forest but Kat continued sprinting.

We ran for what seemed like forever when Kat finally stopped.

"Mom a-and dad should be he-here soon." She said breathless.

I sat down and let my tong hang out, today was not a good day for running.

We waited and waited, but Kat's parents didn't come.

It was starting to get dark and Kat was beginning to cry. Tears slowly dripped down her face.

"They, they d-didn't ma-mak-make it-t." She started bawling.

I trotted over to her and liked some of her tears away. she grabbed me and picked me up.

"I love you buddy. And your all I got left." She managed to pull a small smile out from her sadness.

It's times like these I wish I could talk. I would say something to cheer her up like "hehe isn't that funny? You're Kat and I'm a dog!" then she laugh a little and she'd feel a bit better.

"Well let's find a place to sleep. We're going to be sleeping in here for a while."

I tilted my head, I still had no clue what was going on.

"Oh buddy you don't know... Well a war started. We're going to have to hide."

She looked at me and I started walking.

"Well then buddy you can find us a place to sleep!"
