Before we begin I just want to start off by saying, Moonlight is one of the most inspirational movies of all time. Not only because I'm a young black teen growing up with a lot of the same problems as Chiron but also because it's so unique. It's unique because so many people from so many different ethnic groups or backgrounds can relate to at least one thing from this movie.
The directing of this movie is genius and just down right clever. The way that Barry Jenkins directed the scenes helps the audience get closer insight on how a particular character is feeling, or how a camera angle or movement correlates with the overall tone of the scene. Every angle, every movement, has meaning in this movie.
This isn't your ordinary hood film. Yes it's set in the hood part of Miami and even a little in Atlanta but the movie doesn't solely focus on that. The music, the overall feeling, helps the audience not desensitize themselves to the feelings of the characters. A lot of the times, in other hood movies; tragedies, addictions, and things of that sort is seen as something that is normal. It's almost like we expect it to happen, but the vibe from this movie makes it feel almost as if we are watching a person actually going through these things, and we can sympathize and even empathize.
In the black community, well this is just from my point of view, our black men are almost seen as super humans or something. People don't see their humanity. People don't think they have feelings. And even our own people raise them to have this hyper masculinity. I believe in an interview one of the characters from moonlight said that the hyper masculinity leaves no room for vulnerability, or sensitivity.
I do admit that I am very late on this movie. It came out 2016 and I'm just now watching it summer 2018. I've been sleep, I know. I'm so happy that I watched it when I did though because I needed to watch it at this stage of my life. I identify with this movie on an even deeper level now, than I would have back then.
I really do love this movie. Now, onto my adaption of section two. Chiron. I hope you enjoy, and hopefully I do this movie justice. I have my work set out for me, especially since the movie itself has this sort of elegance in the way that it was portrayed. Hopefully I can mimic the same effect on paper.
Without further ado, let's begin.
