Elijah:
When Elena is finished at the cemetery, I take her to our old mansion in Mystic Falls. Neither of us knows where she should go now. And truth be told, I'm ecstatic with joy that she's staying with us for now.
I can see it in her eyes that she desires to ask me why none of her friends - those who are still alive - are here to welcome her back, so I make it easier for her, and I start talking myself.
'Caroline and Stefan are living far away from here at the moment, but news travels fast, so don't worry, they will be here soon, surely.'
Cheered up, she asks me carefully: 'And Damon?'
I sigh. 'Elena, I... I'm sorry, but I don't think he's ever coming back.'
'But why? WHAT happened exactly? Who's the woman he's with now? Do I know her?' She's staring at me so intensely it's scaring me a little. She's obviously determined to pry this information out of me no matter what it takes. 'Elijah, please, I know that you know. Tell me the truth.'
'He... waited a long time, really. He wanted to stay faithful to you, but it was hard... And then he fell in love with a girl... A woman...'
'But who?'
'Matt's daughter.'
'Matt's... you mean Matt Donovan's?'
'Yes,' I nod. 'It was love at first sight, fatal, you could say. He waited when she was as old as him and then he took the vampire cure, which he originally planned to take because of you, and they're growing old together.'
'Damon is HUMAN now?'
'Yes... and... He and Lucy have children, a family...' I watch her upper lip trembling - a clear sign that she's about to cry.
'I'm sorry,' I say compassionately.
'It's not your fault. Elijah, I... Thank you for telling me, for being here for me, for letting me stay in this house! I don't know how I can pay you back.'
'By being a pleasant company. And having dinner with me.'
'That sounds more like a reward!' she smiles a bit.
'It is. For me,' I return the smile.
'In that case, I'll gladly let you have it!' she says, and she makes me a really happy man.
