CHAPTER 2

“Pocahontas… Pocahontas… I’m coming… I’m coming back.

Pocahontas gasped. “It’s John! I can hear John!”

Meeko looked at Flick in surprise, and then back at Pocahontas.

“Answer him, dear!” Grandmother Willow said excitedly.

“John? Are you well? What’s happened to you?” She cried.

“I’m well.” The voice began to fade.

“John! Don’t leave! When will you be back?” she wept.

Very, very soon.”  His voice faded completely.

Pocahontas leapt up, and yelled to Grandmother Willow, “I… he… John said he is well, and that he’s coming back!”

“That’s wonderful! Did he say when?”

“His voice disappeared, but I heard him say ‘Very soon’.”

“You see, my dear, you two are Kindred Spirits - soul mates. Even though you are far apart, you can still contact each other. All you need to do is listen… listen with your heart.” The tree blubbered.

“Thank you so much, Grandmother Willow!” Pocahontas burst out joyously.

The willow said cautiously, “I must warn you though, not to speak of this to anyone. There are many men in your village who have feelings for you, and would like to marry you themselves. If they hear that John is coming back, jealousy may get the better of them. At least if they know nothing yet, they might be caught off-guard. Tell only who you must.”

“I understand.”

“Good. Now off with you, child! Back to your village!”

“Goodbye, Grandmother Willow.” She beamed.

The trees face disappeared again, just as fast as it had appeared.

“Come on then, Meeko.” Pocahontas said, as she picked him up and carried him like a baby. “You too, Flick.” She climbed down off the stump, and made her way back to the canoe.

She got into the canoe, and sat Meeko on her lap. Flick perched himself on her shoulder again.

Then they were off, making their way back to the village.
