Chapter 4

Pocahontas awoke at sunrise, to find Meeko pulling open her eye lids.

“Meeko!” She giggled

Nakoma was also with him. She smiled and asked, “Why weren’t you in your hut? We were worried when we saw you weren’t there.”

“I’m sorry. I just couldn’t rest last night, so I came here and managed to fall asleep.”

“Well, anyway, let’s get to the river and wash before the others get up.” Nakoma suggested.

“Ok, I’ll meet you there.” Pocahontas said happily.

Nakoma left, headed towards the river.

Pocahontas opened up the compass again. This time, the arrow was pointing East.

“That’s strange! I thought it was broken.” She said mentally. Shrugging it off, she put the compass into her pocket.

She met Nakoma at the river. They played like little children, splashing each other and giggling. Even Meeko joined in the fun. Flick waited on the shore where it was dry. He’d had a bad experience with playing in water before and almost drowned.

When they’d finished washing and playing, they collapsed onto the bank, exhausted.

“Let’s go for a walk!” Pocahontas suggested.

“Yeah, let’s go the forest, and pick some berries.”

“I’ll race ya!” Pocahontas cried.

As she ran past Nakoma, she stuck her foot out, and tripped Pocahontas. “The last one there’s a rotten egg!”

“You cheat! Just wait ‘til I catch up!”

They finally arrived at the forest, tuckered out, and decided that it was a draw.

Pocahontas collapsed onto the forest floor, and looked up into the tops of the trees. “How beautiful!” And it was. The colours. The rich brown tree trunks, topped by the many shades of green leaves, moss creeping up the bark. Everything matching perfectly with the sky. Hell, even the dirt on the floor was perfect.

Even if she could, Pocahontas wouldn’t change a thing about that beautiful place. Natural beauty.

Unexpectedly, Meeko suddenly bounded into the forest, and jumped straight onto Pocahontas’ stomach as she was lying on the ground looking up.

“Ooooh!” She gasped. “You are such a lump, Meeko!”

Nakoma giggled, picking him up and cooing over him. He jumped down, and sat next to Pocahontas, looking straight at her. She sat up.

He looked so cute, but Pocahontas knew that look in his eyes.

“I don’t have any food, Meeko!” she said, giggling.

He sniffed around her, just making sure.

“Look, all I have is John’s compass.” She retorted, pulling it from her pocket and showing him.

He let out a squeak, before snatching it and opening it up.

To everyone’s surprise, the arrow was spinning mindlessly.

“What’s it doing?” Nakoma questioned.

“I don’t know... it did it once before when…” Pocahontas gasped, “He’s here! I know it!”
