I do not own the harry potter world created by J.K. Rowling, other than a few characters and my ideas incorporated into J.K. Rowling's books and the films.
This is book two in the series, following "The Girl Who Lived" I suggest reading the first book before this one to understand this book more. Also, spoilers for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and the films before this may be present in this fanfiction. I hope you enjoy :D
I sat up. That nightmare had been haunting me again. I couldn't even nap without him invading my mind.
Ever night since the graveyard I had relived Cedric's death, over and over and over again. I watched the light fade from his beautiful eyes just before it faded from mine. Except I got the second chance he deserved. I walked away from the one I loved, leaving him in death while I chose life. I was the last person to see his pale corpse, and all I left him with was a rose and a kiss goodbye.
I still felt guilty for being alive. Over the summer I had felt the darkness fill me as I sat in my empty cubby hole in the orphanage. The summer had been long and lonely. I didn't have any friends there, my violent rate had increased by 10 injuries so it made sense why no one wanted to talk to me. I hadn't received any mail from Harry, Ron or Hermione which sucked.
I peeled the tight sheets off of my sweaty body and climbed out of the sweat-soaked bed. I walked to the opposite side of the room and knelt by the contained window, staring at the lifeless streets and blackened sky.
I sat there for a while, just staring into the motionless black sky. It was funny how it could be so dark yet it was only 6pm.
As I sat there something in the distance caught my eye. Two black figures swam through the sky, pretty similar to dementors. No wait, they were dementors. Why were there dementors in the muggle world?
"What the hell?" I muttered to myself as the creatures grew further from me.
Dementors were dark cloaked creatures that were used to guard the wizard prison Azkaban and they weren't allowed anywhere else, so why were they in London?
I silently jumped to my knees and slammed open the door to my wardrobe. I reached my hand to the back of the wardrobe and grabbed my hidden firebolt. When I had arrived back at the orphanage after my first year at Hogwarts they had confiscated most of my things, but I had managed to secretly steal them back without the staff knowing. They would allow me my homework during the day to complete, and I didn't have to attend lessons in the orphanage either, which was nicer.
I slid open the window and clambered through it, then I jumped out and quickly grabbed my broom and began to zoom into the night.
Over the summer I had been spending most of my time on my broom, it helped clear my head. One girl in the orphanage had added an invisible feature on my broom so I could fly without being spotted by muggles, or the staff. All she wanted in return was to learn a few spells, including expecto patronum. The spell was pretty advanced magic, but Harry had taught me it since he fought off hundreds of dementors in his third year at Hogwarts.
As I flew the cold stale air rushed past, brushing against my skin and knotting my long brown hair. The city lights below me lit up the way, shining onto the dark demons. I was flying for a good 10 minutes, soaring past clear rivers and soundless houses full of sleeping bodies.
The dementors approached a tunnel and began to lower to the ground, they were chasing someone. I followed cautiously, pulling out my wand ready for the fight. As I neared the ground I hopped off my broom and came across two boys, their life being sucked away by the cloaked monsters.
Before I could do anything, the boy pinned against the brick wall of the tunnel pulled out a wand and yelled out "Expecto Patronum!" His wand let out a beam of light which created a force field around him, sending the dementor into the night.
"Expecto Patronum!" I shouted, aiming at the second dementor attacking a second boy lying on the floor, who appeared to be a muggle. The dementor above him squealed and fled the scene, following the other in his path.
"Are you okay?" I asked the boy wizard, who spun around to look at me. Wait, I knew him. "Harry?"
"Elizabeth!" He smiled as he hugged me. "What are you doing here?"
"I saw the dementors and followed them here." I admitted as I walked over to the other boy who was lying on the floor motionless and cockeyed. "So this is our cousin. I will be honest I was hoping for better."
Harry didn't answer. I turned to him and he was facing the opposite way, towards another person.
"Mrs Figg?" Harry asked, afraid she had seen what had just happened. She was an old nimble woman, wearing a yellow waterproof coat and a white spotted waterproof bonnet, tied at her chin.
"Don't put away your want Harry. They might come back." She replied, shock registered on Harry's face. I leaned down to Harry and asked "Who's that?"
"One of my neighbours." He replied. "I have to get Dudley home."
Harry began to pick up the dizzy boy still lying on the floor.
"You're half his size, you'll never carry him." I said, examining the boy called Dudley.
Eventually the two of us with the help of the other woman were able to lift the beast and began to carry him out of the damp underground area. Harry and I held him up, one arm supporting Dudley and the other carrying my broom.
"I haven't stopped thinking about him all summer." I admitted as we emerged into the streetlights.
"Neither have I." Harry answered, sadness in his voice. "How do you know about us Mrs Figg?" He asked, changing the convocation topic.
"Dumbledore asked me to keep an eye on you." She replied.
"Dumbledore?" Harry asked the woman.
"How would you know him?" I joined Harry in questioning the woman.
"Well after you-know-who killed that poor Diggory boy last year did you expect him to let you go wandering around on your own? Come on boy, they told me you were intelligent." The lady laughed, but it was not funny.
Cedric. He was yet again in my mind, I couldn't stop thinking about him.
Once we reached Privot Drive, the street home to our muggle aunt, uncle and cousin Dudley I turned to Harry, looking at him past Dudley.
"I think I better go, they're definitely not going to welcome me with open arms." I dropped Dudley, leaving him for Harry to carry and lifted my broom.
"See you soon." Harry lightly smiled as I hopped on my broom and flew off into the night.
